Gorman-Rupp V4A Ultra V Series Self-Priming Trash Pump

Description

The Gorman-Rupp V4A is the 6 x 4 inch model of the Ultra V Series, a high-head, solids-handling, self-priming centrifugal trash pump built on the Super T Series platform. It is the pump to look at when a plain trash pump runs out of pressure: the manufacturer states the Ultra V Series delivers up to three times the pressure and up to 60 percent more flow than traditional self-priming trash pumps, while still passing sewage-type solids.

Where the V4A fits among Ultra V models

The Ultra V range covers 3, 4 and 6 inch discharge sizes with maximum capacity to 1904 GPM and head to 325 ft when combined with the UltraMate booster. The V4A sits in the middle: a 6 inch suction and 4 inch discharge casing that handles 3 inch solids at 154 ft maximum head, which suits sewage bypass, process-water transfer and tall-building or long-pipeline dewatering where head, not only flow, matters. Because the casing is self-priming it can sit above the liquid and be serviced without disturbing pipework.

Design details that matter in service

The semi-open impeller has pump-out vanes on the shroud to keep foreign material from packing behind the impeller and to reduce pressure on the seal and bearings. The self-cleaning wearplate carries grooves, notches and a tooth to shred stringy material, and the optional Eradicator solids management system is available for all Ultra V models. Wearplate clearance is set from outside through a shimless coverplate with a collar and adjusting screw, so belts or couplings do not need realigning, and the manufacturer says this design doubles impeller and wearplate life. A lightweight inspection cover comes off with four nuts and common hand tools to clear a clog.

The whole rotating assembly can be pulled without disturbing the volute or piping; pusher bolt holes help removal and let a spare assembly be fitted for minimum downtime. Dual sight gauges show seal and bearing oil, and a pressure release valve protects the casing.

Selecting and configuring the pump

Ultra V pumps are supplied as basic pump ends, as sound-attenuated engine-driven back-up systems, or built into ReliaSource packaged stations. Optional accessories listed by the manufacturer include automatic air release valve, discharge check valve, volute casing heater, suction and discharge gauge kits, flange kits, spare parts kit, easy drain kit, custom seal options and alternative elastomers (EPDM, Neoprene, AFLAS, Viton). Sibling models in the same literature are listed below for comparison.

Model Suction x discharge Max capacity Max head Max solids
V3A 4 x 3 in 720 GPM 158 ft 2.5 in
V3B 4 x 3 in 845 GPM 110 ft 3 in
V4A 6 x 4 in 1028 GPM 154 ft 3 in
V4CSC 6 x 4 in 984 GPM 154 ft 3 in

Hot ambient temperatures and sand-laden effluent are common in Gulf installations; the abrasive-duty cartridge seal and replaceable wearplate are the design answers the literature gives for abrasive or trash service. Confirm duty point, temperature, liquid and driver with the manufacturer before ordering.

Duty point in other units (derived)

Unit conversions below are calculated from the printed maximum values and are not manufacturer statements.

Item Value
Maximum capacity 1028 GPM = 65 lps = 234 m3/h (lps x 3.6)
Maximum head 154 ft = 47 m = about 4.6 bar of water column
Capacity x head (derived) about 10998 m4/h

Because the V4A is a 6 x 4 inch pump, the suction line should normally be one size larger than the discharge, which the casing already reflects. For sewage and sludge-type duty the literature points to the Eradicator system as the way to deal with wipes and stringy solids rather than adding a macerator upstream. When a system curve exceeds the V4A head, the UltraMate booster described in the same brochure is the route the manufacturer offers, not a larger casing.

Support literature and parts

The brochure says operation and maintenance manuals with parts lists, specification data sheets, performance curves and outline drawings are available in PDF and CAD formats for every pump, through the manufacturer website or a local supplier. It also states that most parts orders are filled and shipped within 24 hours from tens of thousands of genuine parts, and that factory-trained service networks are available. Ask for the curve for the V4A impeller trim you intend to use, because the brochure shows maximum values only.

Frequently asked questions

What does the V4A pump size mean?

The V4A has a 6 inch suction and 4 inch discharge, with a maximum capacity of 1028 GPM and 154 ft head in the manufacturer’s operating range table.

Can the V4A pass solids?

Yes. The table lists a maximum solids size of 3 inches (75 mm), handled by a two-vane semi-open impeller.

Is the V4A self-priming?

Yes. The Ultra V Series is a self-priming centrifugal design with an externally removable suction check valve.

How can head be increased further?

The literature offers the UltraMate unit, paired through a transition chamber, to raise maximum pressure up to three times that of a conventional single-stage self-priming pump.

Which warranty is stated?

Gorman-Rupp states a five-year warranty on all Ultra V Series pumps in the brochure; confirm terms with the manufacturer.
