A 10 A mains inlet that filters noise at the appliance entry

The TDK B84771A0010A000 combines a standard IEC 60320 appliance inlet with a two-line EMC filter. The mains cable plugs into the C14 inlet on the line side and the load side leaves through tab connectors, so the filter sits right at the equipment entry and keeps conducted noise from switch-mode power supplies out of the mains. It is rated 10 A at 50 C on 250 V AC, 50/60 Hz, and the A in the code means the version with a discharge resistor.

The same series also offers C types without discharge resistor and M types for medical equipment with negligible leakage current.

Versions and ratings in the B84771 series

The datasheet covers 1 A to 20 A. Up to 15 A the inlet is C14; the 16 A and 20 A types use a C20 connector, a larger X2 capacitor of 0.33 uF and a weight of 130 g. The ENEC approval of the 12 A and 15 A types applies at 10 A, and for the 20 A type at 16 A. Litz-wire load-side versions with 18 AWG or 16 AWG leads are listed separately in the datasheet.

• Choose the A type when a discharge resistor across the line is wanted; C omits it.
• Choose M types for medical equipment where leakage current must be minimal.
• Pick current at 50 C ambient; the 10 A rating is referred to 50 C, not 40 C as on panel-type filters.

Reading the datasheet values

Two things define the electrical behaviour of this code: the 2 x 0.24 mH inductors in the live and return paths, and the capacitor set of one 0.1 uF X2 capacitor with two 2200 pF Y2 capacitors to earth. The low leakage figure of 0.173 mA is calculated according to IEC 60939-1 annex A; TDK states that, because of the insulation resistance of the ceramic capacitors, up to double that value can be expected in practice. The 1 MOhm resistor of the A version discharges the X capacitor after the plug is pulled.

Mounting and safety

The screw-mounting version bolts into a panel cut-out, so the inlet face is visible and accessible. TDK warns that qualified persons must carry out installation, that the filter stores charge, that the protective earth must be connected first, and that the component can become very hot in operation. Because mechanical loads must not be taken by the filter, the cable plug should not be used as a strain relief point for heavy cords. Where the equipment is to be used in a medical setting, the M version rather than this A version is the one designed for negligible leakage.

Selection and installation notes

An EMC filter or reactor is selected from the rated current at the actual ambient temperature, the supply voltage and the drive or load it serves. Fit it as close as possible to the drive input, keep the cable between filter and drive short, bond the housing to the panel back plate with a clean metal contact, separate input and output cables, and check the leakage current against the protective earth requirements of the installation.
