Description
Where the SS-1GS4 uses tube fitting ends, the Swagelok SS-1GM4 has 1/4 in. male NPT threads on both ports. That makes it a direct in-line shutoff for threaded pipe nipples, tees and manifold blocks: the valve is screwed into the line instead of being tubed in. It is a 1G series toggle valve with a 316 stainless steel body, a nylon toggle handle and a PTFE soft-seat stem tip with a 0.125 in. orifice and 0.20 Cv.

Male NPT body, compact length
Without tube fitting nuts, the male NPT version is shorter than the tubed one: the catalog lists 1.96 in. (49.8 mm) for the 1/4 in. male NPT body against 2.26 in. (57.4 mm) for the tube fitting SS-1GS4. Because it is threaded directly into the pipe, the valve body itself must resist the wrench torque you apply, so tighten into the port with a wrench on the body flats and never on the handle or panel nut. Use thread sealant suited to the fluid on the tapered threads.
NPT threads seal on the taper, and a tapered male thread is not suited to repeated assembly in soft ports.
Soft seat, low pressure
The PTFE seat gives tight shutoff but holds a lower rating than a metal-seated valve: 300 psig (20.6 bar) for the 0.080 and 0.125 in. orifice versions, with a temperature span of -20 to 200 F. The valve is factory tested with nitrogen at 200 psig with no detectable leakage at the seat and seal, and cleaned to SC-10. It is for on-off duty only.
Compare the 1/4 in. female NPT SS-1GF4, which has a larger 0.250 in. orifice, a Cv of 0.70 and only 200 psig rating, before choosing between the two.

Swagelok is the American maker of tube fittings and small-bore valves, best known for its two-ferrule compression tube fitting. Fred A. Lennon and Cullen B. Crawford founded it in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 1947 as Crawford Fitting Company to make that fitting. Lennon bought the whole business and the patent in 1948, and the company has been based in Solon, Ohio, since the mid-1960s.

A Swagelok part number can be read directly. In SS-810-6, "SS" is 316 stainless steel, "810" means a 1/2 in. tube fitting (8 sixteenths of an inch, 10 series), and "-6" is a union. A suffix such as "-8" adds a 1/2 in. NPT end, and "M0" marks metric tube, as in SS-12M0-6 for 12 mm. Tube fittings must be made up the same way every time: finger-tight, then 1 1/4 turns for most sizes. A gap inspection gauge confirms the fitting has been pulled up.
