Donaldson Ultrapure Smart ALG 0005-0100 Breathing Air Unit

A breathing air purification unit for 5 to 100 m3/h

The Donaldson Ultrapure Smart ALG is a plug-and-play breathing air unit that dries compressed air and removes carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, oil vapour, hydrocarbons, taste and odour. The sheet quotes breathing air quality according to DIN EN 12021 and DIN EN ISO 7396-1, which are the standards named for the medical, paint and finish and industrial machinery uses.

It follows the same cartridge design as the Oilfreepac Smart. Ten sizes cover 5 to 100 m3/h in two body groups, and the Standard and Superplus versions differ in the control and display package.

What the unit removes

After drying in the desiccant cartridges the air passes purification cartridges that adsorb CO2, SO2 and NOx as well as oil vapour, hydrocarbons, taste and odour. A UltraPleat afterfilter retains any desiccant dust. The pre-filter and condensate drain protect the cartridges from water and liquid oil.

The table shows selected sizes of the ten listed. About 17 percent of the inlet flow is used for regeneration in every size, so plan the compressor capacity for the inlet figure, not the outlet figure.

Choosing and checking

The Superplus version adds a dew point transmitter, touch display, orifice set, dew point control and independent display mounting. The sheet shows correction factors for operating pressure and inlet temperature, with an example of type 0015 for 22 m3/h at 25 C and 12 bar.

The sheet lists a power consumption of 12 W for the Standard version and 16 W for the Superplus, a sound power level of 60 dB(A) and a declaration of conformity to directives 2014/35/EU and 2014/68/EU. Breathing air is a safety application. The user remains responsible for compliance with the national breathing air rule, for gas monitoring and for the compressor intake location; confirm the required quality grade with Donaldson and with the safety officer before ordering.

How the purification stages work together

The Ultrapure Smart ALG combines several treatment steps in one housing, so the installer does not have to assemble a dryer, adsorber and filters separately:

1. Pre-filtration and condensate drain – liquid water and liquid oil aerosols are separated before they can reach the desiccant, because liquid contamination shortens cartridge life.
2. Adsorption drying – desiccant cartridges dry the air to a pressure dew point of -40 °C. The two cartridge chambers alternate between adsorbing and regenerating, which is why a share of the dry air is used as regeneration air.
3. Gas and vapour adsorption – purification cartridges retain CO2, SO2 and NOx together with oil vapour, hydrocarbons, taste and odour.
4. Afterfiltration – the UltraPleat afterfilter retains desiccant dust so that the outlet air is free of particles from the unit itself.

Standard or Superplus version

Dew point control lets the unit adapt regeneration to the actual load, which can reduce purge air consumption when the plant runs below nominal flow. Where operators need a visible confirmation of dryness at the point of use, the Superplus display is the more practical choice.

Sizing the unit correctly

• Start from the breathing air demand of all users who can be connected at the same time, including masks, hoods and suits, and add a margin.
• Apply the correction factors from the data sheet for actual operating pressure and inlet temperature. Lower pressure and higher inlet temperature reduce the permissible flow.
• Remember that regeneration air is taken from the inlet flow; the compressor must deliver the inlet figure.
• Observe the pressure limits: 4 to 16 bar for the MINI body sizes 0005 to 0025 and 4 to 12 bar for the MIDI sizes 0035 to 0100.

Considerations for Oman and GCC sites

Breathing air systems in the region serve blasting and painting contractors, confined space entry, refinery and petrochemical maintenance and hospitals. High ambient temperatures and humidity increase the water load on the compressor and the dryer, so a well-sized aftercooler and pre-filtration are important. The unit is specified for ambient temperatures from 4 to 50 °C; it should be installed in a shaded, ventilated location rather than in direct sun. The compressor intake must be placed away from engine exhaust, vehicle traffic and process vents, because carbon monoxide is a major hazard for breathing air and must be monitored.

Maintenance

Desiccant and purification cartridges, pre-filter and afterfilter elements have defined service intervals given by Donaldson. Keep a log of element changes, dew point readings and gas test results, and test the breathing air quality at the intervals required by the applicable standard and your site safety procedures.

• Required breathing air flow and number of users.
• Minimum and maximum operating pressure and inlet temperature.
• Supply voltage: 230 VAC, 115 VAC or 24 VDC.
• Standard or Superplus version, and any spare cartridge sets.
• The breathing air standard required by the site or client.
