VEGA VEGAPULS Air 41 Autarkic Radar Level Sensor G1½ Thread

Description

The threaded wireless radar for mobile silos and liquid tanks

The VEGAPULS Air 41 is the threaded-connection version of VEGA’s autarkic radar sensors. It uses a lithium battery and a radio module for NB-IoT, LTE-M or LoRaWAN transmission, so it can be mounted on a mobile silo or storage tank with no cable at all. VEGA recommends it for all stand-alone applications with bulk solids and liquids, in particular mobile bulk-solids silos holding dry mortar, concrete or plaster and liquid tanks of all kinds, and notes that typical measurements under average conditions give a battery life of over eight years. The sensor measures up to 20 m with a deviation of 2 mm and an 8° beam.

Choosing the 41 over the 23 and 42

VEGA’s type overview separates the Air series by vessel: the Air 23 (3 m range, adhesive or tension-belt mounting) is for IBC and plastic vessels, the Air 41 has a threaded G1½ fitting for a mounting socket, and the Air 42 carries a DN 80 compression flange and a 4° beam for 30 m. The 41 therefore fits any existing 1½” boss on a metal or plastic tank or silo, reducing the mechanical work to a standard thread. A Bluetooth module allows operation with the VEGA Tools app or PACTware via a USB adapter.

Remote readout and limits

Measured values travel by cellular or LoRaWAN radio to an asset-management system such as the VEGA Inventory System, which VEGA says can also send parameter changes back over a backward channel depending on version. Because the process pressure limit is only 2 bar and the temperature range -20 to +60 °C, the Air 41 suits atmospheric silos and tanks. Confirm radio network availability and any local approvals for radio equipment before ordering.

For stand-alone fleets, such as tanks that are refilled by road tanker, the sensor can report fill states into an inventory portal and avoid manual dipping. The sheet shows the same radar technology as the wired VEGAPULS sensors, an 80 GHz W-band system, which the product information describes as unaffected by dust, noise, buildup and condensation. No approvals are listed in the product information, so confirm hazardous-area suitability with VEGA, and the radio equipment must meet local regulations.

About brand

VEGA is a German maker of level and pressure instruments. Bruno Grieshaber founded the company in 1959 in Triberg in the Black Forest, and it has been based in Schiltach since 1975, still family owned as VEGA Grieshaber KG. VEGA is best known for radar level sensors: it introduced the first two-wire radar level sensor in 1997 and the first 80 GHz radar sensor for bulk solids, the VEGAPULS 69, in 2015.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing VEGA radar and guided wave radar transmitters, point level switches, pressure transmitters and signal conditioning instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. Sensors are matched from the product code on the type label.

Where VEGA instruments are used

VEGA radar sensors measure level in crude oil and product tanks, separators, chemical reactors, cement and aggregate silos, grain stores and water reservoirs. Compact cable radars are widely used in wastewater pumping stations and flood monitoring. Because 80 GHz radar focuses a narrow beam, it can measure past internal structures in a tank, and it is not affected by the temperature, pressure or vapour above the product, which suits hot Gulf storage tanks.

Ordering VEGA instruments: what we need

The product code on the type label (for example PS64.XXXXXXX) fixes the measuring range, antenna or probe, process connection, electronics and approvals. Send it with the serial number. For a new measurement add the medium and its dielectric constant if known, tank or silo height and internals, process pressure and temperature, process connection, output (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS PA, Modbus or IO-Link), and any hazardous-area or overfill protection approval required.
