Allen-Bradley 5069-IA16 Compact 5000 16-Point AC Input Module

Description

A 120/240 V AC input module for Compact 5000 I/O

The Allen-Bradley 5069-IA16 is a sixteen-point 120/240 V AC input module for the Compact 5000 I/O family used with CompactLogix 5380 controllers. All sixteen inputs form one group with a shared return, and the module accepts 79 to 264 V AC at 47 to 63 Hz, so it handles both 120 V and 240 V field signals without a different model.

It is the choice when contactor auxiliaries, limit switches or relay contacts in an existing panel are wired at mains voltage but the controller is being upgraded to CompactLogix 5380.

AC power and the SA bus

The IA16 takes its field voltage from the SA power bus, so the bus feeding it must be AC. The technical data requires AC-type and DC-type modules to be separated by a 5069-FPD field potential module, and notes that Compact GuardLogix 5380 controllers do not support AC power on their SA power terminal blocks. The module is also marked as compliant to UKEX/ATEX/IECEx only when used at or below 125 V AC.

Filter settings and ordering

The engineering software lets you pick filter values that are not valid for the connected signal: on a 120 V AC input only the 1 ms off-to-on filter is valid, while 240 V AC allows 1, 2 or 5 ms. A wrong value can make the module misread levels, so set the filters according to the supply voltage. Order the terminal block kit separately and confirm the series with the manufacturer data.

Check the supply before ordering: the module accepts 79 to 264 V AC and shows an off-state limit of 40 V AC at 2 mA, so long cable runs with high capacitance should be reviewed for leakage. Each of the 16 points has its own yellow/red indicator for loop checks during commissioning.

Selection considerations for AC input modules

Mains-voltage inputs remain common in older panels, motor control centres and utility plants, where auxiliary contacts and field switches were wired at the control voltage of the contactors. When such a panel is migrated to CompactLogix 5380, keeping the field wiring at AC and using the 5069-IA16 avoids rewiring every device to a low-voltage circuit. Before choosing it, list each input with its voltage, its source and its expected switching speed, and confirm that all sixteen points can share one group and a common return. Signals from separate supplies or phases that must stay apart need a different arrangement, because the module has no channel-to-channel isolation.

Also check that the devices in the field really switch fully off. Two-wire proximity switches and devices with leakage paths can leave a residual voltage or current on the input, and this must stay below the stated off-state limits for the module to read the signal correctly.

Installation and commissioning practice

Plan the Compact 5000 I/O layout before assembly so that AC and DC modules are grouped and separated as the technical data requires. Mount the modules on the DIN rail in the planned order, fit the removable terminal blocks, and use wiring and fusing that match the field circuit. Keep AC input wiring apart from low-level analog and network cables in the cable ducts, label each conductor with the point number, and earth the panel according to the installation instructions.

At commissioning, set the filter time for each input to match the supply voltage as described above, then work through every input point in turn while watching the status indicators and the tag values in the controller. Operate the real field device rather than a jumper wherever possible, so that wiring errors and leakage problems are found before handover.

Operation and maintenance

In service, the per-point indicators make fault finding quick: compare the indicator with the field device and the program value to tell a wiring fault from a logic issue. Check terminal tightness and signs of heat during planned shutdowns, and keep a spare module and terminal block for critical systems so that a failed unit can be replaced quickly under the site’s isolation procedures.

Compact 5000 I/O in GCC control panels

Control rooms and outdoor panels in Oman and the GCC can run hot, and dust or humidity can enter poorly sealed enclosures. Keep the panel interior inside the stated operating temperature and non-condensing humidity range, using ventilation or cooling where the heat load and sun exposure require it, and keep enclosure doors closed. In the RFQ, list the catalog number, quantity, required terminal blocks, the controller and field potential arrangement planned, and whether the system will be used in a hazardous area, so the configuration can be reviewed against the manufacturer data.

About brand

Catalog numbers beginning 1756, 1734, 1746 or 5069 are read at a glance by anyone who maintains Allen-Bradley control panels. The brand, the control hardware name of Rockwell Automation, dates back to 1903 in Milwaukee, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Allen-Bradley PLC and I/O modules, communication adapters and PowerFlex drives for plants in Oman, matching catalog number, series letter and firmware against the manufacturer's documentation.

Allen-Bradley product families listed here

Current controller platforms on this page are ControlLogix, with the 1756-L85E ControlLogix 5580 controller and the 1756-PA72 chassis power supply, and CompactLogix 5380, with the 5069-L320ER and 5069-L340ERM. Distributed I/O is represented by POINT I/O: the 1734-AENTR dual-port EtherNet/IP adapter and the 1734-IB8 digital input module. Where Allen-Bradley hardware is used

ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers run packaged equipment and plant utilities: compressor and pump skids, water and wastewater plants, power distribution, material handling and packaging lines. PowerFlex drives control pumps, fans and conveyors. Many SLC 500 racks are still in service.

Ordering Allen-Bradley modules and drives: what we need

Send the full catalog number, the series letter and, for controllers and communication modules, the firmware revision printed on the side label. Compatibility with an existing project depends on these. For PowerFlex drives, give the complete catalog string, which encodes voltage, current rating, enclosure and options, plus the motor nameplate data. For SLC 500 parts, tell us the rack size and processor so that we can check slot and power supply loading in the manufacturer's manuals. A label photo avoids most mistakes.
