Posi Lock PHS-208 2-Jaw Self-Contained Hydraulic Puller

Description

The Posi Lock PHS-208 is a two-jaw, self-contained hydraulic puller: the pump and cylinder are built into the tool, so there is no separate pump, hose or gauge to carry. A telescopic handle drives the ram, which makes it a practical choice for removing bearings and gears at the machine, away from the workshop.

A self-contained puller with the pump built in

Conventional hydraulic pullers need a cylinder, a hand or electric pump and a hose. The PHS series packages these into one body, so a technician can walk to a motor or gearbox with a single tool. The maker’s instructions describe the sequence: set the jaws with the T-handle, fit extension rods and a cone between the cylinder shaft and the shaft end, lock the jaws, close the control valve and pump the telescopic handle until the part moves or the ram reaches the end of its stroke.

Two jaws are useful where a third arm would not fit around a housing, pulley or neighbouring component.

Selecting the right self-contained model

The standard jaws open from 0.75 to 12 inches and reach 8 inches. Long and extra-long jaw sets are listed as options, and the three-jaw sister model PHS-108 is listed as related. The instruction sheet linked from this page is headed 12 Ton Puller Instructions for the PHS-108, so the PHS-208 rated capacity should be confirmed with us before purchase rather than assumed.

Choose extension rods that bring the cone to the centre of the shaft end, and make sure they align with the shaft before the T-handle is tightened. Reverse the T-handle procedure to take the puller off after the pull.

Care and field use

Because the hydraulics are inside the tool, as a general precaution keep the control valve closed when the puller is being carried, and keep the tool clean and dry. Inspect the jaws and cage for cracks or wear before each use, replace damaged parts, and never use the puller as a lifting device. Wear eye protection, keep hands away from the jaw pinch points and cover the job with a blanket in case a pulled part breaks. Spare parts are identified in the maker’s PHS-208 parts breakdown and accessory list, which should be requested with the order if jaws, extension rods or cone assemblies need replacing later.

Matching the PHS-208 to the job

Before taking the puller to a machine, measure the component that has to come off. The outside diameter where the jaw tips will grip must fall inside the spread listed above, and the distance from the gripping face to the shaft end must be within the reach of the jaws. Check the space behind the part as well: the tip clearance and tip depth figures show how much room the jaw tips need to get behind a bearing race, gear or pulley. If the part is mounted deep on the shaft, compare the job with the long and extra-long jaw options before ordering rather than forcing the standard jaws.

Think about the jaw arrangement too. A two-jaw puller grips at opposite points, which works well on narrow access and on components with two natural pulling faces, while a part that needs even support around its whole circumference may suit the three-jaw sister model better.

A safe pulling sequence on site

  • Isolate and lock out the machine, and allow hot components to cool before work starts.
  • Clean the shaft end and the area behind the part so the jaw tips seat squarely.
  • Centre the puller on the shaft using the extension rods and cone described in the instructions, and keep the puller axis in line with the shaft.
  • Tighten the jaws with the T-handle, check that both tips are fully engaged, then close the control valve.
  • Pump the telescopic handle steadily and watch the jaws; stop and reset if a tip starts to slip or the puller tilts.
  • Once the part is free, release the pressure, reverse the T-handle procedure and remove the puller.

Field maintenance in hot and dusty conditions

Maintenance crews in Oman frequently work on pumps, motors and gearboxes outdoors or in hot plant rooms where sand and dust settle on every surface. Wipe the tool before and after use, keep it in its case or a covered location when not in service, and avoid leaving it in direct sun on vehicle beds or on hot steel. Dust on the jaws and the cylinder shaft can transfer into moving surfaces, so keep these areas clean. In coastal workshops, a light protective film of oil on exposed steel surfaces between jobs helps limit corrosion, provided it is wiped off before the jaws are used.

What to include in your quotation request

To get an accurate offer, state the model PHS-208, the quantity and the delivery location, and describe the typical components you plan to pull, including their outside diameter and how far they sit from the shaft end. Mention whether long or extra-long jaws are of interest and whether you need the parts breakdown and accessory list with the tool. Because the rated capacity is not printed on the product page, ask for written confirmation of it in the quotation.

About brand

Posi Lock Puller is a US maker of gear and bearing pullers, founded in 1978 in Cooperstown, North Dakota, and part of Hydraulic Technologies. Its pullers use a safety cage that holds the jaws on the part.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Posi Lock pullers and tool sets for maintenance workshops in Oman and the GCC.

Posi Lock product series

Hydraulic pullers include the PHA-108 10 ton, PHA-113 25 ton and PHA-116 50 ton three-jaw pullers, the PHA-113IE 25 ton internal and external puller, the PHS-208 two-jaw self-contained puller and the PH-100T 100 ton three-jaw puller.

Manual tools include the 108 17 ton three-jaw gear and bearing puller and the TK-107 4-in-1 internal and external puller set. The AT-1108 Side Align is a horizontal alignment tool set for moving motors and pumps during shaft alignment.

Hydraulic pullers are chosen by the force needed and the reach and spread of the jaws; the self-contained PHS and PHA models have their own pump, and the larger PH-100T is used for heavy couplings and large bearings. The safety cage keeps the jaws from slipping off the part under load, which reduces the risk of injury when pulling seized components.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does self-contained mean for the PHS-208?
The hydraulic pump and cylinder are part of the tool, driven by a telescopic handle, so no separate pump or hose is needed.
How many jaws does it have?
Two jaws; the three-jaw PHS-108 is listed as a related model.
What spread and reach are listed?
Spread is 0.75 to 12 in. (19 to 305 mm) and reach is 8 in. (203 mm).
Is the pulling capacity stated?
Not on the PHS-208 page. The linked instruction sheet is for the 12-ton PHS-108, so confirm the PHS-208 rating before ordering.
Are longer jaws available?
Long and extra-long jaw sets are shown as optional, with PHS-208L and PHS-208XL listed as related models.
