Micro Motion R-Series General Purpose Coriolis Flow and Density Meters

Description

General-purpose Coriolis measurement to replace mechanical meters

The Micro Motion R-Series is the manufacturer general-utility Coriolis family. The datasheet positions it as a replacement for mechanical flow meters in applications that need flow and density, with a rugged, drainable, low-frequency sensor that reads mass flow, volume flow, density and temperature simultaneously. Models run from R025 (0.25 in, DN6) to R300 (3 in, DN80) in 316L stainless steel, with a high-pressure R025P.

Selecting an R-Series meter

The R-Series trades some accuracy for cost and simplicity compared with the F-Series, so it fits batching, distribution, allocation and intra-plant measurement where 0.4 to 0.5 percent is sufficient. Because the sensor is dual tube with no flow conditioning or straight-run requirement in the datasheet, it is often used to replace turbine or positive displacement meters in existing lines. It pairs with the same MVD transmitter range, with output choices including 4-20 mA, HART, WirelessHART, FOUNDATION fieldbus and Modbus, and with Smart Meter Verification that gives a result in under 90 seconds. For higher accuracy compare the F-Series and the Micro Motion ELITE CMF series.

The datasheet also warns that process temperature and pressure effects are small but real: the process temperature effect is ±0.00175 percent of maximum flow per °C, and a pressure effect applies on some sizes unless pressure compensation or a fixed meter factor is used. Zeroing at normal operating conditions removes most of the temperature effect, so plan a zero check at commissioning.

What to confirm before ordering

  • Fluid, flow range, density, viscosity, pressure and temperature, and any gas content
  • Sensor size and material suffix (S or P) and the process connection with rating
  • Transmitter model, mounting and output or protocol
  • Hazardous area approval, because the approvals shown are typical for a 1700 transmitter

How the Micro Motion R-Series works

The R-Series is a Coriolis meter. The fluid flows through a pair of tubes that vibrate at their natural frequency. When mass flows through the vibrating tubes, they twist slightly, and sensors at the inlet and outlet measure the time difference. The twist is proportional to mass flow. The vibration frequency gives the density of the fluid, and a temperature sensor on the tubes corrects the readings. One sensor therefore gives mass flow, volume flow, density and temperature at the same time.

Where the Micro Motion R-Series is used

  • Batching and filling
  • Distribution and allocation metering
  • Intra-plant transfer lines
  • Replacement of turbine and positive displacement meters
  • Liquids and gases that need flow and density

Selection checklist for the Micro Motion R-Series

  • Sensor size from R025 to R300
  • High pressure R025P if needed
  • Calibration code A or basic accuracy
  • Flow range and turndown
  • Process pressure up to 100 bar
  • Flange standard, ASME or JIS
  • Transmitter type and output
  • Hazardous area approval for the site

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Mount the sensor so that it can drain, and support the pipe so that vibration of the line is not passed to the sensor. The datasheet lists no straight-run requirement. Connect the transmitter, then zero the meter with the pipe full and the flow stopped. Check the density reading against a known fluid. There are no wearing parts in the flow path.

Requesting a quotation for the Micro Motion R-Series

Please send the fluid, the flow range, the pressure, the temperature and the transmitter requirements. Seven Star LLC serves industrial customers in Oman and the GCC and replies with a quotation based on the information provided.

Micro Motion R-Series density and temperature

The liquid density accuracy is plus or minus 3 kg per cubic metre with code A and 10 kg per cubic metre as basic. The temperature accuracy is plus or minus 1 degree C plus 0.5 percent of reading.

Micro Motion R-Series flow range

The maximum flow rate is 2,720 kg/h for the R025, 8,160 for the R050, 32,650 for the R100, 54,341 for the R150, 87,100 for the R200 and 238,499 for the R300.

Micro Motion R-Series pressure and temperature

The working pressure is up to 1,450 psig, or 2,300 psig for the R025P. The electronics work from -40 to 60 degrees C.

Flow meter records for Micro Motion R-Series

Keep the calibration factors, the zero value and the commissioning density check with the instrument file.

Choosing the right Micro Motion R-Series size

At a turndown of 20 to 1 the accuracy is plus or minus 1.0 percent, and at 10 to 1 it is plus or minus 0.40 percent, so size the meter so the normal flow sits in the upper part of its range.

About brand

Coriolis flow and density meters have carried the Micro Motion name since 1977, when the company started in Boulder, USA. A Coriolis meter measures mass flow directly and reads density from the same tubes. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists the Micro Motion ELITE CMF400 Coriolis flow and density meter and the compact G-Series, and sources Micro Motion flow meters by complete model code.

Micro Motion meter families

ELITE is the manufacturer's top performance family for flow and density, and the CMF400 is one of its larger line sizes. The G-Series is a newer, very compact family for general duty. Each sensor is paired with a Coriolis transmitter, and the range also includes density and viscosity meters. Liquids, gases and slurries can all be measured, which is why these meters appear in oil and gas, refining, chemical, food and marine service.

Ordering Micro Motion meters: what we need

A Micro Motion sensor and its transmitter each have their own model code and serial number; send both. For a new meter we need the fluid, flow range, density, viscosity, operating pressure and temperature, line size, process connection and rating, wetted material, hazardous area approval, outputs and protocol. Custody transfer duty in the GCC should be stated up front because it changes the approvals and calibration options requested.
