Brand: KSB
KSB Magnochem Magnetic Drive Chemical Process Pump
Description
Sealless magnetic drive pump for hazardous and valuable fluids
The KSB Magnochem is a magnetic drive chemical process pump for handling aggressive, toxic, explosive, valuable, flammable, malodorous or harmful fluids in the chemical, petrochemical and general industries. A magnetic coupling replaces the shaft seal, so the pumped fluid is enclosed by a containment shroud and not by a dynamic seal. KSB describes the series as a further development of its tried and tested magnetic drive pump, with an optimised modular system for the magnetic couplings.
The leaflet shows three versions: Magnochem W, Magnochem D and Magnochem-Bloc.

Reliability and environmental features
The standard ceramic containment shroud is loss-free, which supports the energy efficiency KSB claims for the modern hydraulic design. Optional DLC-coated silicon carbide plain bearings have optimised dry-running properties, and a maximum of two static seals are needed. Leakage barrier options are available for demanding duties. KSB highlights multiple operating modes, reduced stock levels and an improved mean time between failures, and says the pump is suitable for new applications thanks to its expanded temperature range.
Selecting a magnetic drive pump
Magnetic drive pumps rely on the pumped fluid for lubricating and cooling the bearings, so state the fluid properties carefully: viscosity, solids content, vapour pressure, density and temperature, and whether dry running can occur. Also give flow, head, NPSH available and the driver. The leaflet says KSB offers conventionally sealed, magnetic drive and canned motor pumps, so compare with the other types when the fluid permits.
Installation and piping practice for the Magnochem
A sealless pump only performs as well as the system around it. Before setting the Magnochem on its foundation, check that the baseplate or mounting surface is level and rigid, and that suction and discharge piping are independently supported so that no pipe load is transferred to the casing. Misaligned or strained piping is a common cause of vibration and bearing distress in any centrifugal pump, and with a magnetic coupling the consequences are harder to see from outside because there is no seal to show early leakage.
Keep the suction line as short and straight as practical, with gradual reducers and no high points where vapour can collect. Because the plain bearings depend on the pumped liquid, the suction side must deliver a steady, gas-free flow. Where the fluid is close to its vapour pressure, review the NPSH margin carefully with the process engineer and consider how the liquid level in the supply vessel will vary during the operating cycle.
Driver and coupling alignment
For the W and D versions with a separate motor, align the drive shaft after the piping is connected, then recheck once the unit has reached operating temperature. For the Magnochem-Bloc, follow the mounting guidance in the KSB operating manual. In all cases confirm that the motor rating and rotation direction match the duty data supplied with the quotation.
Commissioning a magnetic drive pump
First start-up is the period where most avoidable damage happens to magnetic drive pumps. The casing and suction line must be completely filled and vented before the motor is energised, since even a short period of dry running can stress the bearings. Open the suction valve fully, set the discharge valve to the position recommended in the manual, and check rotation with a brief start only when the pump is primed.
During the first hours of operation, record suction and discharge pressure, motor current and casing temperature. These readings give a baseline for later condition monitoring. A sudden drop in current or a rise in temperature can indicate loss of flow, vapour in the pump or decoupling of the magnets, and should lead to an immediate investigation rather than a restart.
Operating the pump in Oman and GCC plant conditions
Chemical and petrochemical sites in Oman and the wider Gulf combine high ambient temperatures, airborne dust and, near the coast, humid and salt-laden air. These factors mainly affect the motor, the instrumentation and the external surfaces rather than the wetted parts. Make sure the motor enclosure and its cooling are suited to the site ambient, keep motor cooling fins and fan covers free of dust build-up, and provide shading or ventilation for pumps installed in exposed pipe racks where practical.
Heat also matters on the process side. Liquids stored in tanks under strong sun can arrive at the pump warmer than the design figure, which reduces the available NPSH and may bring the fluid closer to boiling. When specifying the duty, state the realistic maximum fluid temperature for summer operation, not only the nominal process value.
Routine maintenance and monitoring
Because there is no mechanical seal to service, maintenance of a magnetic drive pump focuses on keeping operating conditions within the design envelope. Trend pressure, current and vibration at regular intervals, inspect the baseplate bolts and pipe supports, and check the motor bearings according to the motor maker’s schedule. When the pump is opened for inspection, follow the KSB manual for handling the magnetic coupling components, keep the work area clean of metallic particles, and decontaminate the wetted parts properly when hazardous fluids have been handled.

About brand
KSB is a German manufacturer of pumps and valves, founded in 1871 in Frankenthal by the engineer Johannes Klein together with Friedrich Schanzlin and Jakob Becker, whose initials form the company name. The group is still headquartered in Frankenthal, Rhineland-Palatinate, and is listed as KSB SE & Co. KGaA.
Seven Star LLC lists KSB pump families including Etanorm, Movitec, Multitec and Omega, and supplies KSB pumps and spare parts to operators and contractors in Oman and the GCC, matching each request to the manufacturer's documentation.

Ordering KSB pumps and parts: what we need
For a spare part, send the type series and size, the KSB order number and serial number from the nameplate, and the part number from the sectional drawing. For a new pump, give flow, head, liquid, temperature, suction conditions, material preference, and motor voltage and frequency. Mechanical seal code and impeller diameter matter on replacements, because one pump size is built in many variants.
Facts checked against KSB's own company history (ksb.com) and its 150-year press material, October 2026.
