Moore Industries HES HART to Ethernet Gateway

Description

A HART to Ethernet gateway that exposes smart-instrument data over MODBUS/TCP and HART-IP

The Moore Industries HES converts signals from wired HART devices to Ethernet MODBUS/TCP and HART-IP. It gathers process data and instrument diagnostics from a single smart HART instrument, or from several in HART multidrop, and shares them over an Ethernet network. It supports HART 5, 6 and 7 devices, with a single-channel version for up to 16 devices and a four-channel version for up to 64 devices in total. Moore Industries shows it in an oil and gas tank battery application, retrofitting existing HART installations without replacing field devices, and notes that it handles thousands of process variables and diagnostic points.

Temperature concentration and security options

With the -TCM option the HES polls Moore TCM Temperature Concentrator Modules, each a 16-channel input module, so a single-channel HES can send 32 temperature points from two TCMs and a four-channel unit up to 128 points. Security settings let the user limit active MODBUS/TCP sessions to between 0 and 4, limit HART-IP sessions to between 1 and 4, and use jumpers to set read-only or read/write access to the IP, network and HES settings. The MODBUS register map can be compressed and laid out by variable or device type to protect bandwidth.

Ordering and documents

The order code is Unit / Input / Output / Power / Options [Housing], for example HES/4HART/ETH/9-30DC/-MB [DIN]; the -MB MODBUS/TCP output option is required. The HES is configured with any FDT-compliant host such as free PACTware, and the IP address is set with Moore NAC client software. Confirm the number of HART devices per channel, the SCADA or DCS protocol and the area classification of the instruments before ordering. The attached datasheet (April 2025) contains the full specification and examples.

How the Moore Industries HES works

The gateway connects to the 4-20 mA loop of a HART instrument and acts as a HART master. It sends HART commands to the device, reads the process variables and the diagnostic data, and keeps them in its memory. Control systems and software then read this data over Ethernet by MODBUS/TCP or HART-IP, without any change to the existing loop wiring. The analog signal keeps working in parallel with the digital data, so the plant can add the new information without a shutdown of the control loop.

Where the HES is used

  • Oil and gas tank batteries and wellheads
  • Retrofits of existing HART installations
  • Asset management and device diagnostics
  • Collecting data from multidrop HART loops
  • Linking HART instruments to a SCADA or PLC network

Selection checklist for the HES

  • Single channel HES/HART or four-channel HES/4HART
  • Number of HART devices, up to 16 or up to 64
  • Network protocol: MODBUS/TCP or HART-IP
  • Normal or burst mode devices
  • Supply of 9 to 30 VDC
  • Need for a transmitter supply on channel 1
  • Option for TCM temperature concentrator modules
  • DIN rail space for 102 x 135 x 48 mm

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Mount the gateway on a 35 mm DIN rail and connect the supply and the HART loop. Give the unit a fixed IP address or use DHCP, and open its read-only web page to check the devices it finds. Set the HART address range and the retries. Map the MODBUS registers into the host system and compare the values with the instruments. Keep a copy of the settings and check the network cable and the grounding from time to time.

Requesting a quotation for the Moore Industries HES

Please send the number of HART devices, the protocol and the options needed. Seven Star LLC serves industrial customers in Oman and the GCC and replies with a quotation based on the information provided.

HES network data

The Ethernet port is 10/100Base-T with an RJ-45 jack. MODBUS/TCP allows up to four connections at the same time.

About brand

Signal conditioning is what Moore Industries has built in North Hills, California since 1968: temperature transmitters, signal isolators, alarm trips and the interface instruments that sit between field sensors and a DCS or PLC. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists Moore Industries temperature transmitters, limit alarm trips, isolators and a PID backup controller, and sources units and replacements by full model number.

Moore Industries product families on this page

The manufacturer's catalog is arranged by function, and many of the items listed here map onto it directly:

  • Temperature transmitters: the TRX, and the STZ functional safety dual input smart HART transmitter
  • Alarm trips: the SPA2 programmable limit alarm trip, including an SPA2 with HLPRG input and four relay outputs
  • Signal isolators, repeaters and converters: the SIX
  • PID controllers and backup stations: the 535 in 1/4 DIN format

Other catalog groups include temperature assemblies and sensors, I/P and P/I converters, remote I/O, HART gateways and interfaces, indicators, and fieldbus device couplers.

Where Moore Industries instruments are used

These are control room and marshalling cabinet devices, plus field-mounted transmitters. Typical jobs are isolating a 4-20 mA loop between two systems, converting a thermocouple or RTD signal for a DCS input, adding an independent high or low trip next to the control system, and keeping a control loop running on a backup station when the main controller is out of service. Process plants in oil and gas, chemicals and power across the GCC use them for exactly these tasks.

Ordering Moore Industries instruments: what we need

Moore Industries model numbers are built from fields separated by slashes: unit, input, output, power and options, followed by the housing code in brackets. Every field matters. Send the complete string from the label, the serial number, and for programmable units the input type and range you want set. State any hazardous area or functional safety requirement, because approved versions are ordered with their own option codes.
