Brand:

NSK BL210 Maximum Ball Bearing

Description

A maximum ball bearing with extra balls for higher radial capacity

The NSK BL210 is a maximum ball bearing with a 50 mm bore, 90 mm outside diameter and 20 mm width, the same boundary dimensions as the standard 6210 deep groove bearing. NSK builds maximum ball bearings with filling slots in the inner and outer rings, which allow more balls than a normal deep groove bearing. The result is a higher basic load rating in the same envelope: the BL210 is listed at Cr 43,000 N and C0r 35,000 N against 38,500 N and 23,200 N for the 6210, a static rating about 50 percent higher. It is used where radial load is high and axial load is low, for example in gearboxes, pump bearings, conveyors and electric motor shafts where a standard bearing would be marginal.

Limits, mounting and selection

Because of the filling slots, NSK states that maximum ball bearings are not suitable for applications with high axial loads. When mounting, NSK advises placing the filling slot of the outer ring outside the loaded zone as far as possible, so orient it away from the direction of the heaviest radial load. The cage is pressed steel, and besides the open type the ZZ shielded version is available, and a one-shield Z version is listed. NSK asks users to contact it when using maximum ball bearings, so specify the application, speed, loads and temperature when enquiring. The listed limiting speed is lower than for the same-size 6210.

For sealed standard bearings see the SKF 6206-2RS1, and for cylindrical roller options with greater radial capacity NSK NU2 series cylindrical roller bearings, and browse Electric Motors, Pumps and Turbines.

When a maximum ball bearing is the right choice

The BL210 earns its place when a shaft carries a heavy radial load, the housing is already machined for a 50 x 90 x 20 mm bearing, and axial load is small or taken by another bearing in the arrangement. Swapping a 6210 for a BL210 raises the load ratings without any change to the shaft or housing, which is attractive when a machine has a history of early bearing failures from overload. It is not a universal upgrade, though. Where the shaft sees thrust from helical gears, belt misalignment or impellers, the filling slots become a weak point and a standard deep groove bearing, an angular contact pair or a cylindrical roller bearing with a locating bearing elsewhere is usually the better engineering answer. The lower limiting speed also matters on high-speed shafts, so compare the operating speed with the table before deciding.

Mounting practice

Handle the bearing in a clean area and keep it in its packaging until it is needed. Check the shaft and housing seats for size, roundness and damage, and remove burrs and old corrosion. Press-fit forces must go through the ring being fitted, never through the balls, so use a mounting sleeve or tool that bears on the correct ring face. Induction heating is common for interference fits on the shaft, with temperature controlled so the bearing is not overheated. Before final assembly, identify the filling slot on the outer ring and turn the ring so the slot lies outside the loaded zone, as NSK recommends. Mark the position on the housing so the next fitter can repeat it.

Lubrication and maintenance

Open bearings rely on the machine’s lubrication system, so match the grease or oil to the speed, load and temperature, and keep relubrication intervals realistic for the duty. Shielded Z and ZZ versions keep coarse contamination out and retain grease, but they are not sealed against fine dust or water. Condition monitoring with vibration and temperature trending is the most practical way to catch problems early; a maximum ball bearing that has been overloaded axially often shows damage near the filling slots, which is worth noting during failure analysis.

Dust, heat and humidity in the Gulf

In Oman and other GCC sites, conveyors, crushers, pumps and motors often work in fine abrasive dust and high ambient temperatures, while coastal plants add humid, salty air. These conditions shorten grease life and encourage contamination, so good external sealing on the housing, clean relubrication practice and protected storage of spare bearings are just as important as the bearing selection itself. Keep spares in their original packaging, indoors and away from condensation.

What to put in the enquiry

A useful request names the exact designation, including the Z or ZZ suffix if shields are wanted, the quantity, and the machine it is for. Adding the loads, speed and temperature helps confirm that a maximum ball bearing is appropriate.

If the bearing replaces a failed unit, a photograph of the old bearing markings and a short description of how it failed are also helpful, because they show whether the original selection, the lubrication or the mounting needs attention before a new bearing goes in.

Ordering NSK bearings: what we need

Give the complete designation marked on the bearing, including prefix and suffix letters such as seal, cage, clearance and precision codes. If the marking is worn, measure bore, outside diameter and width and tell us the machine and shaft position, the operating speed and the lubrication. State the quantity and any precision class or special clearance required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an NSK maximum ball bearing?
It is a deep groove ball bearing with filling slots in the inner and outer rings, which let it hold more balls than a normal deep groove bearing and carry higher load.
What size is the BL210?
Bore 50 mm, outside diameter 90 mm and width 20 mm, equal to the 6210 deep groove bearing.
Can the BL210 take high axial load?
No. NSK states that because of the filling slots, maximum ball bearings are not suitable for applications with high axial loads.
What load ratings does the BL210 have?
Cr is 43,000 N and C0r is 35,000 N, compared with 38,500 N and 23,200 N for the 6210.
Is a shielded BL210 available?
Yes, NSK lists BL210Z with one shield and BL210ZZ with two shields as well as the open type.
