Brand:

Datakom DKG-171 Automatic Transfer Switch Controller

Description

A compact 72×72 mm auto transfer switch controller for remote-start gensets

The DKG-171 is a low-cost, microprocessor-controlled automatic transfer switch (ATS) controller. It monitors the three-phase mains voltages, sends a remote start command to the generating set and changes over both the generator and mains contactors. The genset itself is supposed to be controlled by a remote-start type control unit; Datakom notes that the DKG-171 is intended for use with the DKG-114 unit but, because the connections are simple, it can be used with many commercially available or custom-built engine control systems. The front-panel mimic diagram shows mains and generator availability and contactor positions with coloured LEDs. In the field it is the part that completes a simple standby panel when the engine controller has no built-in transfer logic, and it is listed with our diesel generator spare parts.

Transfer sequence and TEST mode

Both the datasheet and the installation instructions describe the sequence in detail. If at least one mains phase leaves its limits, the MAINS LED turns from green to red, the mains contactor output is de-energised and the green LOAD MAINS LED goes out. After the Wait Before Remote Start delay the Remote Start output closes so that the generator controller runs the engine. When the generator phase voltage is within limits the yellow GENSET LED comes on and the engine heats for the heating period; then the LOAD GENSET LED blinks while the unit waits for the generator contactor delay before closing the generator contactor.

When all mains phases return, the unit waits the 30 second mains return delay, releases the generator contactor, waits the mains contactor delay, energises the mains contactor and drops the Remote Start output. A TEST pushbutton energises the Remote Start output without transferring load unless the mains fail; if mains return the load goes back to mains but the genset keeps running until TEST is cancelled. If a cooling-down sequence is required it must be performed by the generating set control unit. The unit also uses high-current two-part connectors for easy replacement.

Selection and installation notes

Use the DKG-171 where the transfer decision should be taken by a small dedicated module: for example, with a manual or remote start genset controller on a pump house, a telecom shelter or a small standby set. If the engine controller already has AMF logic, such as a DKG-309 or D-series unit, an extra transfer module is not needed. Set the low voltage limit with the potentiometer on the left side of the unit; the leftmost position corresponds to 70 V, the middle to 170 V and the rightmost to 270 V-AC. Size the external contactors for the load, because the relay outputs are rated 10 A at 250 V-AC, and provide mechanical or electrical interlock between the two contactors.

In a typical panel the DKG-171 sits next to a small engine controller and two power contactors. The datasheet gives fixed timing values: three seconds before the remote start request, five seconds of engine heating, a 0.75 second contactor change-over delay and a 30 second wait after mains return so that the supply can stabilise before the load is moved back. These fixed delays make the unit predictable on small sets, but they also mean that sites needing adjustable timers or engine protection should use a full genset controller instead. Also check that the generating set is wired to start from a dry remote-start contact or battery-positive input, because the Remote Start output switches battery positive.

Selection and installation notes

A generator controller is selected from the start and transfer logic needed, the number of sets, the engine and alternator signals and the communication required. Check the battery supply range, wire the voltage and current inputs and the engine sensors as the manual shows, set the engine and protection parameters from the engine and alternator data and test the start, stop, transfer and every protection with the set running before handover. Keep a copy of the parameter file with the site documents.
