Chadwick-Helmuth

Chadwick-Helmuth is an American maker of rotor track and balance equipment for helicopters and propeller aircraft, founded in the mid-1950s by Jim Chadwick and Jim Helmuth to build vibration test and measurement systems. In the early 1960s it produced a portable rotor track and balance system for Hughes Helicopters, which became the Vibrex/Strobex line, and in the mid-1980s it introduced the model 8500 balancer/analyzer. Honeywell acquired the company in 2002. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists the 8500C and 8500C Plus balancer and analyzer, Vibrex accessories and related parts.

Chadwick-Helmuth equipment listed here

The listings fall into two groups. The first is the instruments themselves: the 8500C rotor track and balance analyzer and the 8500C Plus balancer. A Model 11/11A/11B unit is also listed; reseller literature shows this designation both for a balancer and for the calibrator units used to check Vibrex and Strobex equipment, so the part number must be confirmed. The second is what a maintenance crew needs around them:

  • Photocell system for the 8500C
  • Printer assembly for the 8500C and Vibrex
  • Mounting brackets for the 8500C and Vibrex
  • Protractor used as a blade tracking accessory

A balancing kit is assembled per aircraft type, so brackets, cables and sensors are selected for the airframe as well as for the analyzer.

Where the equipment is used

Rotor track and balance is routine maintenance for helicopter operators: measuring vibration at the rotor frequency, checking blade track, and adjusting weights, pitch links or tabs until the readings fall within the maintenance manual limits. Propeller balancing on fixed wing aircraft follows the same principle.

Ordering Chadwick-Helmuth parts: what we need

Send the part number and description from the kit list or the label, the analyzer model (8500C, 8500C Plus, Vibrex or Model 11 series) and its serial number. Name the aircraft type the kit is used on, since brackets and cables are airframe specific. If the part number has been superseded, we ask for the manufacturer’s current replacement and show you both numbers before you decide.

Facts checked against Aviation Week's 2002 acquisition report, the Vertical Flight Society founder biography and Honeywell's 8500C+ datasheet, October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I identify a Chadwick-Helmuth part?
Each item in a balancing kit has its own part number, printed on a label or engraved on the part and repeated in the kit contents list. Send that number with a photo. If the label is missing, tell us the analyzer model, the aircraft type and what the part does, and we will match it against the manufacturer's kit list.
Is my nameplate Honeywell or Chadwick-Helmuth, and does it matter?
Both names appear on this equipment, depending on when the unit was built. The model designation, such as 8500C or Vibrex, and the part number are what identify the item. Quote them exactly as printed, together with the name on the label, so the supply channel can trace the correct revision.
What is the difference between the 8500C and the 8500C Plus?
Both are balancer and analyzer units in the same family, and the Plus is the later version. Accessories such as the photocell system, printer assembly and mounting bracket are listed for the 8500C family. Before ordering an accessory, tell us which of the two you have and its serial number so compatibility is checked.
What is the Chadwick-Helmuth Model 11?
The designation covers Model 11, 11A and 11B units. Reseller listings show it both as a balancer and analyzer part number and as a calibrator family used to check Vibrex balancers and Strobex trackers, so the name alone does not define the item. Send the part number from the label and a photo. We confirm what the unit is against the manufacturer's documentation before quoting.
Is Seven Star LLC a distributor of Chadwick-Helmuth?
No. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier and is not a distributor or agent of Chadwick-Helmuth or Honeywell. We source Chadwick-Helmuth balancing equipment and parts through commercial channels, check the model or order code against the manufacturer's documentation before ordering, and provide the manufacturer's datasheet and the certificates the manufacturer issues with the order on request.
