Brand: Gorman-Rupp
Gorman-Rupp HSV4A-HYD HS Series Hydraulic Submersible Pump
Description
The Gorman-Rupp HSV4A-HYD is a 4 inch portable hydraulic submersible pump from the HS Series. Because it is driven by hydraulic fluid instead of electricity, it can work in hazardous locations without an electric motor under water. It delivers up to 1010 GPM at 176 ft head and passes 3.5 inch solids, and is used for trash handling, dewatering and moving sludge and slurry in mines, paper plants, digesters and holding tanks.
Why hydraulic drive
The manufacturer lists hazardous-location work as the key benefit: with no electricity at the pump, the unit can operate where an electric submersible is not acceptable. A hydraulic power unit sets the speed, and speeds can be varied to suit the job, giving maximum efficiency and minimum fuel consumption; the brochure says this is more economical than generator-driven electric submersibles that run at a single speed. Fully recessed vortex impellers and oil-lubricated seals allow the pump to run dry without damage, and maintenance can be carried out in the field.

Power units that drive the pump
The brochure lists engine-driven skid power units that can be fitted to a DOT-approved wheel kit. The HSP-GX390 and HSP-L100W models use a Honda GX390 petrol or Yanmar L100W diesel engine for up to 6 GPM (0.4 lps) hydraulic flow at 2100 psi (145 bar). The HSP-KDI2504TCR uses a Kohler KDI2504TCR diesel (Deutz D913L4 for international availability) for up to 28 GPM (1.8 lps) at 3000 psi (207 bar). Match the HS pump to the power unit before ordering; this page does not state the oil flow each pump needs, so request the hydraulic data sheet.
Neighbouring models
| Model | Discharge | Max capacity | Max head | Max solids | Material |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HSV3A-HYD | 3 in | 400 GPM | 71 ft | 2.5 in | Aluminium |
| HSV3B-HYD | 3 in | 335 GPM | 57 ft | 2.5 in | Ductile iron |
| HSV4A-HYD | 4 in | 1010 GPM | 176 ft | 3.5 in | Ductile iron |
| HSV6A-HYD | 6 in | 1600 GPM | 112 ft | 5 in | Ductile iron |
The 6 inch HSV6B31-HYD is described as fitting through 22 inch (559 mm) manholes, which is useful for sewer bypass and trenching. Note that this literature gives no flammable-area certification; confirm the classification requirement separately.
Duty point in other units (derived)
Unit conversions below are calculated from the printed maximum values and are not manufacturer statements.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Maximum capacity | 1010 GPM = 64 lps = 230 m3/h (lps x 3.6) |
| Maximum head | 176 ft = 54 m = about 5.3 bar of water column |
| Capacity x head (derived) | about 12442 m4/h |
Typical use is in places where electric submersibles are impractical: sumps and tanks in mines and plants, digesters and holding tanks, or sewer trenches. Hydraulic hoses and couplings, power-unit flow and pressure, and hose length all influence performance, so list them when requesting a quotation. The pump passes up to 3.5 inch solids and can be staged with another unit for more head, which the S Series literature describes for submersibles generally.
Ordering information and support
The HS Series is offered in ductile iron and aluminium configurations in 3, 4, 6 and 8 inch discharge sizes with capacities to 2640 GPM and heads to 176 ft. Each pump is supported by manuals, performance curves and outline drawings in PDF and CAD format through the manufacturer, and the brochure quotes warranties of up to 60 months across the product range. State hose length, hydraulic pressure and flow available, and the required discharge connection when you request a quotation.
Compared with the 3 inch HSV3A-HYD at 400 GPM and 71 ft, the HSV4A-HYD offers more than twice the flow and nearly 2.5 times the head, and a larger solids passage of 3.5 inch against 2.5 inch.
Frequently asked questions
Why use a hydraulic submersible pump?
It has no electric motor in the liquid, so it can work in hazardous locations, and speed can be varied.
What are the HSV4A-HYD limits?
1010 GPM (64 lps), 176 ft (54 m) head and 3.5 in (89 mm) solids.
Can it run dry?
Yes, the recessed vortex impeller and oil-lubricated seals allow dry running without damage.
What powers it?
A hydraulic power unit, for example the engine-driven HSP skid units listed in the brochure.
What material is the pump?
Ductile iron for this model.
