JUMO dTRON 316 Compact Controller with Program Function, Type 703041

A 48 x 48 mm PID controller with ramp and program function

The JUMO dTRON 316 (type 703041) is the smallest member of the dTRON 300 series of freely programmable compact controllers for temperature, pressure and other process variables. The same platform is also offered as the dTRON 308 (48 x 96 mm portrait and 96 x 48 mm landscape) and dTRON 304 (96 x 96 mm). The device acts as a two-state, three-state, modulating or continuous controller with P, PD, PI or PID structure and stores two parameter sets, four setpoints and a program or ramp function.

The front carries two four-digit seven-segment displays, a two-character 16-segment unit display, indicators for the active setpoint, six switch-position indicators and a manual-operation indicator, all operated with four keys. Commissioning is possible on the device or through the JUMO setup program, which includes a program editor and a startup function for checking the control-loop behaviour. Two self-optimization procedures (oscillation method and step-response test) calculate proportional band, reset time, derivative time, cycle time and filter time constant.

Choosing the dTRON format, options and extra codes

The basic type is selected first: 703041 is the 48 x 48 mm dTRON 316, 703042 and 703043 are the 48 x 96 mm and 96 x 48 mm dTRON 308, and 703044 is the 96 x 96 mm dTRON 304. The 703041 offers two option slots, whereas the larger formats offer three. Version 8 is the standard with factory settings and version 9 is programming to customer specification. The logic output level is selected as 0/12 V or 0/18 V.

Supply voltage code 23 selects 110 to 240 V AC and code 25 selects 20 to 30 V AC/DC. Extra code 214 adds the math and logic module, 217 a ratio controller, 218 a differential controller and 219 a humidity controller (the last three require two analog inputs); extra code 879 covers AMS2750/CQI-9. A calibration certificate needs the thermocouple type and calibration points to be stated at order.

Installation, measuring-circuit monitoring and typical uses

Panel mounting follows IEC 61554, with minimum panel cut-out spacing of 11 mm horizontally and 30 mm vertically for the 703041, increasing to 65 mm vertically when the setup connector is used. Wiring is made at the rear screw terminals. For 3-wire or 4-wire resistance thermometers lead compensation is not required (maximum 30 ohm per lead); with a 2-wire circuit the lead resistance can be corrected in software by an offset of the process value.

On a fault the outputs move to a defined, configurable state. The controller recognizes thermocouple break and overrange, and for resistance thermometers also short-circuit; 4 to 20 mA signals are monitored for overrange, short-circuit and break. Four limit comparators with alarm functions, two timers and the logic functions (start self-optimization, setpoint changeover, key inhibit, program start/hold) allow the unit to run furnaces, ovens, extrusion and packaging lines, heat treatment benches and test chambers as a stand-alone loop.
