Pixsys DRR450 22.5 mm DIN Rail PID Controller for SSR

Description

DRR450 is an ultra-compact temperature controller from Pixsys, designed to plug onto a power solid state relay and occupy only 22.5 mm of DIN rail width. It reads a thermocouple, runs a PID algorithm, monitors the load current with an integrated current transformer for load monitoring (50 A per the datasheet) and talks Modbus RTU over RS485, which makes it a building block for multi-zone heating.

One controller per heating zone, with the relay and the diagnostics beside it

The datasheet positions the DRR450 as the most compact solution on the market for multi-zone control and names plastic extrusion, hot-runner systems, packaging machines, textile plants, firing and drying lines and heat-treatment systems. A plug-in terminal block connects straight to SSR units from 25 A to 50 A, and the housing is 22.5 mm wide (up to 49.5 mm for higher-power units). The manual states that the logic output is intended for Celduc SU/SUL series SSRs.

Pixsys describes supervisory software on its Panel-PC or HMI that handles up to 150 zones, with network configuration, recipes for regulation parameters, and graphic recording of temperature and current. The datasheet shows a 144-zone textile control cabinet as an example.

From the datasheet and manual

  • PID temperature regulation with ON-OFF, P, PI, PID and PD algorithms, automatic, manual and synchronized tuning.
  • Loop break alarm and heater break alarm (HBA) by current transformer, signalled on the serial line and the auxiliary output.
  • Modbus RTU slave over RS485 and Modbus TCP/IP slave in the supervisory arrangement for process, setpoint and current.
  • Automatic/manual control of single zones and modification of the output percentage.
  • Softstart function and dual-action heating/cooling.

Selecting the DRR450

The datasheet and manual list a single version, DRR450-12A-T, for 24 V DC. It is the thermocouple type: AN1 accepts K, J, T and E. For PT100 or mA inputs, or for CANopen, use the DRR460 instead. Size the SSR separately for the load; the datasheet names 25 A to 50 A units for the plug-in connector.

Installation and operating notes

Dip switch 8 loads defaults at power-up; dip switches 1 to 7 set the Modbus address in binary (for example 0000101 is 5), and with all of them open the address is taken from parameter 29. Valid addresses run from 1 to 254; 255 addresses all devices and 0 addresses all without expecting an answer. The LED OUT1 shows the output, and the AL LED doubles as heater-break diagnostic: steady on means the SSR is shorted, a 50 ms flash means an open load, and a 0.5 s flash means a partial load loss.

To teach the Heater Break Alarm threshold press the teach key for more than three seconds, or enter the amperes on parameter 22; the delay is parameter 23. Synchronized tuning lets a master switch all zones off or on together, start tuning with word 1004 and read value 4 for completion, within 10 seconds or the controller aborts.

Applications

Typical multi-zone loads in the Gulf include extrusion barrels, hot-runner moulds, sealing jaws, thermoforming ovens and drying lines. With the 0 to 45 °C ceiling, leave ventilation gaps between SSR heat sinks and controllers in warm cabinets.

Selection and installation notes

A temperature controller or process indicator is selected from the input sensor, the range, the outputs it must drive and the panel space. Match the sensor type and range, choose the output to suit the load (relay, SSR drive or analog), run the auto-tuning with the process at normal load, set the alarm limits and keep a record of the final parameters. Use a separate protection device where overheating would be dangerous.
