Brand:

Pixsys DRR244 DIN Rail PID Controller, 2 Loops, CT Input

Description

DRR244 is a DIN rail PID controller from the Pixsys Blue Line with a 72 x 90 mm front and extractable terminal blocks. The datasheet lists one or two configurable analogue inputs, two or four digital inputs, two or three relays, two SSR drives, a volt/mA analogue output, a current transformer input for heater monitoring and an RS485 Modbus RTU port.

Two control loops and a heater-break input on one rail-mounted unit

Most of the parameter groups in the manual are duplicated for regulation loop 1 and loop 2, with separate tuning parameters (73 tun.1 and 98 tun.2) and separate Modbus words (1216 and 1217) to launch tuning. That means one DRR244 can run two heating zones, or a heating and a second independent loop, from the same terminal block. The unit also offers five alarm blocks and two timers that can be started or stopped by a digital input.

The current transformer input (50 mA, 4096 points) supports the heater break alarm described in the manual: you enter the line frequency, the transformer value and a threshold in amperes, and the controller reports a shorted element, an open load or a partial load loss after the set delay. An overcurrent threshold can be set as well, and the average current can be shown on display 2 even when the alarm is disabled.

Selecting the DRR244 code

The datasheet gives the code DRR244-13ABC-T. The datasheet describes the family range as 1/2 analogue inputs, 2/4 digital inputs, 2/3 relays and 1/2 analogue outputs, but prints only this one code, which has one analogue input, three relays, two SSR drives, two digital inputs and one analogue output. Between the datasheet and the manual the supply range and the Q2 relay rating differ, so confirm both on the unit label.

Compared with the DRR224, the DRR244 adds the CT input, the analogue output, five alarms, timers and the serial port. If you only need a single loop with one DI and no monitoring, the DRR224 is simpler.

Tuning and commissioning notes

Automatic tuning is selected per loop. Manual tuning calculates the PID values from a step test and can be started from the keypad, from a digital input configured as tune, or by writing 1 to the Modbus tuning word. The tune threshold is the setpoint minus the set deviation tune, so for better accuracy start it when the process is away from the setpoint. With the soft-start function enabled, tuning cannot be activated.

For extruder-type loads the manual shows the en.sto. mode of automatic/manual control: after a power cut or a sensor break the controller keeps the last PID output percentage in manual mode rather than going to zero.

Applications

Multi-zone heating on extruders, hot-runner and sealing machines, ovens and test benches, where heater current monitoring avoids silent loss of an element. The rail-mount case sits in the cabinet, away from the operator panel; keep the 0 to 45 °C limit in mind for cabinets in hot plant rooms.
