ABB ACS880-01-072A-3 ACS880-01 37 kW Frame R5 AC Drive
Description
ABB ACS880-01-072A-3: 72 A wall-mounted ACS880 drive
ABB ACS880-01-072A-3 sits in the ACS880-01 range of wall-mounted industrial drives. ABB lists it with 72 A nominal current and 37 kW typical motor power at 400 V; the frame size is R5 and the supply range is 380 to 415 V.
Because it uses the ACS880 common architecture, panels, fieldbus adapters and PC tools match those of the other family members. Coated circuit boards and a DC choke are part of the standard delivery.

Mounting space and cooling for frame R5
Mount it on a wall that can carry 22.8 kg, with 203 mm of width and 732 mm of height available and 274 mm of depth. Typical loss is 841 W with 280 m3/h cooling air.
The minimum prospective short-circuit current for the 100 A gG fuse is 1000 A. A 125 A ultrarapid fuse, Bussmann 170M1568, is the alternative, and 3×35 mm2 copper cable is the size ABB gives. For dynamic braking, ABB offers the +D150 brake chopper option because frame R5 is not supplied with one.
ABB recommends motor cables of no more than 300 m for frame R5; beyond that, or with a switching frequency above default, the EMC requirements may not be fulfilled.
Three current figures matter: 72 A for nominal use, 68 A for light duty and 61 A for heavy duty. They correspond to 37, 37 and 30 kW at 400 V, and the input current at that voltage is 72 A.
ABB lists no 500 V rating for the -3 code, so confirm that the plant supply really is in the 380 to 415 V band.
Reading the ACS880-01-072A-3 order code
ABB writes extras after the type code with plus signs. For this drive typical examples are +D150 for the brake chopper, +B056 for UL Type 12, +E200 for the EMC filter and +K492 for a PROFINET IO adapter, each of which changes the order number.
When specifying the ACS880-01-072A-3, compare the drive rating with the motor nameplate rather than with kilowatts alone. Check the rated motor current, the duty cycle and the ambient temperature at the site, and then confirm that the supply voltage and fault level match this size. A drive with the right current but a mismatched network or cable length can need extra filters, so send the full application details with your enquiry.
Choosing between IP21 and IP55 for the installation
The housing choice usually follows where the drive will hang. In a clean, air-conditioned electrical room, the standard IP21 / UL Type 1 housing is normally adequate. Where the drive is mounted close to the machine, in a dusty workshop or in an area that is washed down, the IP55 / UL Type 12 housing listed in the table is worth considering, keeping in mind its larger depth and height. Whichever is chosen, confirm the wall or panel can take the weight, that the cooling air path is not blocked by cable trays or other equipment, and that hot exhaust air from the drive is not drawn back into its own inlet or into neighbouring devices.
Installation and cabling practice
Follow the ACS880-01 hardware manual for clearances, cable entry and earthing. Use a symmetrical shielded motor cable, terminate the shield as the manual describes, and route motor cables apart from control and signal wiring. Select fuses from the types ABB lists and check that the prospective short-circuit current at the installation point is high enough for the chosen fuse to operate correctly. If the plant uses an earthing system other than a standard grounded network, review the manual’s guidance for that earthing system before energising. Wire safe torque off according to the safety design of the machine, not simply bridged.
Commissioning steps and routine care
With the control panel, enter the motor nameplate data, select the control mode and run the identification routine the manual recommends for the application. Check rotation direction, acceleration and deceleration ramps and the behaviour on stop before handing over to production, and test the safe torque off function as part of the machine safety validation. Save a parameter backup once the drive is working as intended. For maintenance, ABB publishes a schedule in the hardware manual covering cleaning, checks of cooling and the replacement of wear items; following it and recording each visit helps keep the drive available.
Running the drive in Oman and GCC heat and dust
The ambient range in the table allows operation up to +55 °C only with derating, so in hot plant rooms or outdoor kiosks the usable current can be lower than the nominal figure. Check the derating curve in the manual against the actual summer temperature where the drive is mounted, and plan room cooling or ventilation with the heat loss figure in mind. Fine desert dust can build up on heat sinks and reduce cooling, so periodic cleaning during shutdowns is advisable, and in humid coastal sites the room should be kept free of condensation even when the drive is switched off.

About brand
ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.
ABB product families on this page
Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.
Where ABB instruments and drives are used
Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.
Ordering ABB parts: what we need
For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
