ABB ACS880-01-021A-5 ACS880-01 7.5 kW Frame R2 AC Drive
Description
ACS880-01-021A-5 ACS880-01 drive: ratings, frame R2 and options
Choose the ABB ACS880-01-021A-5 when a wall-mounted heavy-industrial drive is needed for a motor of about 7.5 kW on a 380 to 500 V network. In the type code, ACS880 is the series, -01 the wall-mounted single drive, 021A the size (21 A nominal) and -5 the voltage range.
ACS880 drives serve pumps, fans, compressors, conveyors and process lines where one control platform is wanted across many sizes. The standard delivery is IP21 (UL Type 1) with an ACS-AP-W assistant panel, a DC choke, the primary control program and Safe torque off.

Installation, cooling and protection data
Mount it on a wall that can carry 8.4 kg, with 155 mm of width and 409 mm of height available and 249 mm of depth. Typical loss is 330 W with 88 m3/h cooling air.
Input protection: 32 A gG, 40 A aR or JJS-35. Cable: 3×6 mm2 copper (UL 10). Both fuse families are listed for frame R2 in the hardware manual. Frames R1 to R4 include a brake chopper as standard, and this drive belongs to that group.
Frame R2 allows a maximum recommended motor cable length of 150 m. Longer cables or higher switching frequencies may stop the EMC Directive requirements from being met, according to the hardware manual.
For constant-torque machines with high overload, read the heavy-duty row: 14 A and 5.5 kW at 400 V. For fans and pumps with modest overload, the light-duty row of 19 A and 7.5 kW applies; the input draws 21 A.
Check the supply before ordering: 7.5 kW applies at 400 V, 11 kW at 500 V, and the 480 V UL figures are 15 hp and 10 hp for light and heavy duty.
Reading the ACS880-01-021A-5 order code
ABB writes extras after the type code with plus signs. For this drive typical examples are +D150 for the brake chopper, +B056 for UL Type 12, +E200 for the EMC filter and +K492 for a PROFINET IO adapter, each of which changes the order number.
Commissioning the ACS880-01-021A-5
Before the first power-up, compare the motor nameplate with the drive rating and confirm the supply voltage is inside the 380 to 500 V window. Check the insulation of the motor and motor cable as described in the ABB hardware manual, with the drive disconnected, and make sure the cable screen is terminated at both ends according to the EMC instructions. Verify that the Safe torque off circuit is wired as the machine safety design requires; if it is not used, it must still be connected so that the drive can start.
Use the ACS-AP-W assistant panel and the start-up assistant in the primary control program to enter the motor data, select the control mode and run the identification routine. Where the motor can be uncoupled, an identification run with the load disconnected generally gives a better motor model. Then set acceleration and deceleration ramps, current limits and the start and stop source, and test the drive in local control before handing it over to the process control system.
Parameters to record at handover
Save a parameter backup to the panel or a PC tool once the drive is tuned and keep a copy with the panel documentation. Record the motor data, the selected duty (light or heavy), the control source and any fault and warning settings that differ from the defaults. This record shortens recovery time considerably if the drive or its control unit has to be replaced.
Operating environment in Oman and GCC plants
The ambient range on this page reaches high temperatures only with derating, and many electrical rooms and outdoor kiosks in Oman and the GCC sit close to that region in summer. Check the derating curve in the hardware manual against the real cabinet temperature on the hottest day, and size the enclosure ventilation or cooling for the drive heat loss listed in the specification table. The IP21 standard housing is meant for clean indoor rooms; where dust, sand or humidity enter the room, mount the drive inside a suitably rated enclosure or select the IP55 housing listed on this page.
Fine dust reduces airflow through the heatsink, so keep air filters on the enclosure clean and the cooling path free of obstructions. In humid coastal plants, avoid letting a cold drive condense when the cabinet is opened, and keep the cabinet climate control running according to the panel design.
Maintenance routine
ABB publishes a preventive maintenance schedule for ACS880 drives; follow it rather than waiting for a fault. At each inspection, isolate the supply, wait for the DC link to discharge as stated in the manual, check terminal tightness on the power cables, clean dust from the heatsink and review the fault logger on the assistant panel. Recurring overtemperature warnings usually point to a ventilation or dust problem rather than a drive defect, and should be traced back to the enclosure before the drive is replaced.
Documents and quotation
Figures on this page come from the ABB ACS880-01 hardware manual and the ABB ACS880 single drives catalogue, and the abb.com product record identifies the exact type code. See also our ACS880-01 family page and the AC Drives category.
Check the type code against the existing drive label or the project drawing before you request a price. Seven Star LLC (independent supplier, Muscat) supplies on quotation, with availability confirmed at that stage.

About brand
ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.
ABB product families on this page
Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.
Where ABB instruments and drives are used
Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.
Ordering ABB parts: what we need
For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
