The Dodge Set Screw SC and SCM line is the standard-attachment mounted ball bearing in the Dodge range. Dodge calls it the industry standard for reliability and performance, and describes the set screw method as the simplest and easiest to install. Two set screws spaced at 65 degrees give what the catalogue calls an optimum balance between locking force and inner ring stress, and the heat-treated inner ring resists cracking. Because the shaft is locked by screws rather than a cam, it can spin in both directions, which suits reversing drives.

The range runs from light duty to extreme duty and washdown lines, in a wide choice of housing styles and bore sizes from 1/2 to 3-1/2 inches. SC is the normal-duty series and SCM the medium-duty one, both with a wide inner ring.

Part numbers shown are standard-grease units; the -NL suffix gives a never-lube sealed-for-life version, and the catalogue also lists SCU pillow blocks for the 203 and 206 rings. Capacities and allowable loads are catalogue values in pounds for 1,000 rpm at 30,000 hours L10 life. For loads, speeds or lives not tabulated the catalogue gives L10 = (C / P) cubed multiplied by 16,667 / n hours, with a thrust guide of C/10.

Seals, cage and care

The DualGuard seal combines a land-riding single-lip seal with a rubberized flinger, which Dodge describes as an industry first. Rubber baffles create a turbulent airflow around the seal, and grease chambers on the inner surface stop lubricant leaving the bearing. The nylon cage has natural lubricity and resists fatigue better than metallic cages, which helps when some misalignment cannot be avoided. Set screw torque ranges from 28 to 33 in-lbs for a #10 screw up to 342 to 428 in-lbs for a 7/16 inch screw. The catalogue notes that a small amount of grease at frequent intervals is preferable to a large amount at long intervals, and warns that too much grease at high speed causes overheating.
