Advantech ECU-1152 Industrial Communication Gateway with 2 x LAN and 6 x COM

Description

A RISC-based gateway that joins six serial lines to two Ethernet ports

The Advantech ECU-1152 is an industrial communication gateway built on a TI Cortex A8 processor at 800 MHz with 512 MB DDR3L memory. It has six isolated RS-232/485 serial ports, two 10/100 Ethernet ports, one USB port and a full-size Mini PCIe slot for Wi-Fi, cellular or 4G modules. Advantech aims it at solar power, electricity and factory installations that need wireless and Ethernet links back to a control centre.

The operating system is RTLinux 3.12 and programming is in Linux C using the open Edgelink SDK, which lets integrators write their own applications. The configuration tool is Advantech Edgelink Studio. The datasheet lists Modbus and IEC-60870 protocol support, web access for remote monitoring, online firmware updates, data logging to the micro SD card, and PLC drivers for Mitsubishi, Siemens, Omron and Delta controllers.

A wide -40 to 70 degrees C operating range and a 10 to 30 VDC supply suit cabinets in unconditioned spaces.

Ordering codes and wireless options

Two part numbers are listed. ECU-1152-R11ABE is the gateway with 2 x LAN, 6 x COM and one Mini PCIe slot. ECU-1152TL-R11ABE is the same unit supplied with Edgelink software. A DIN-rail buckle, 1950020136T001, is ordered separately.

The sheet names compatible radios. Wi-Fi choices are the 96PD-RYUW131A1 (Wi-Fi 4, 2.4 GHz) and the EWM-W172H01E and EWM-W180H01E (Wi-Fi 5 with Bluetooth, 2.4 and 5 GHz), with dipole antennas and coaxial cables. Cellular choices are the 96PD-EC25EFA (LTE Cat. 4 for EU, TW, IN, KR, SEA), 96PD-EC25JFA (Japan) and 96PD-EG25GGB (global) Mini PCIe modules and a socket modem for the US, 96PD-MDG200AU0. SIM cards are not included. Micro SD cards of 4 GB and 8 GB industrial SLC grade are listed as storage upgrades.

What to confirm before ordering

State which serial protocols you need to collect, the radio technology and the region, because the datasheet notes that the unit carries CE and FCC marks but no RED certification. Check that the Edgelink software option or your own Linux C application covers the polling and protocol conversion required.

How the Advantech ECU-1152 works

The ECU-1152 sits between serial devices and an Ethernet network. Meters, controllers and sensors with RS-232 or RS-485 ports connect to its six serial ports. The gateway reads their data, converts the protocol, and passes it on over the two Ethernet ports or over a radio module in the Mini PCIe slot. It runs Linux on a Cortex A8 processor, so an integrator can write an application in C with the Edgelink SDK. Data can also be logged to the micro SD card when the network is down.

Where the ECU-1152 is used

  • Solar power plants and electricity substations
  • Factory data collection from serial meters and PLCs
  • Remote sites with a cellular or Wi-Fi link to a control centre
  • Protocol conversion between Modbus and IEC-60870
  • Cabinets in unconditioned spaces

Selection checklist for the ECU-1152

  • Number of serial devices, up to six
  • Serial standard, RS-232 or RS-485, and the baud rate
  • Protocols needed, such as Modbus or IEC-60870
  • PLC brand, Mitsubishi, Siemens, Omron or Delta
  • Wireless module for the Mini PCIe slot
  • Supply of 10 to 30 VDC
  • Wall or DIN-rail mounting, and the DIN-rail buckle
  • Ambient temperature range of -40 to 70 degrees C

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Mount the gateway on a wall or on a DIN rail. Connect the supply with the correct polarity, then the serial lines and the Ethernet cable. Fit the radio module and antenna if a wireless link is used. Set the port parameters and the protocol in Edgelink Studio. Test each serial device and check the LEDs for power, LAN and serial activity. Keep a copy of the configuration and update the firmware online when needed.

About brand

ADAM modules are how many instrument and SCADA engineers first come across Advantech. The Taiwanese company, founded in 1983 and based in Taipei, makes industrial computers, remote I/O and communication hardware. Seven Star LLC supplies Advantech automation products to system integrators and plant teams in Oman, and this page lists items such as an ADAM-6000 Ethernet I/O module, an ADAM-4000 serial converter and an IPC rackmount chassis.

Advantech ADAM and IPC products listed here

The ADAM-6017 is an 8-channel analog input module from the ADAM-6000 Ethernet I/O family. It brings voltage and current signals onto a network and is read by SCADA or PLC software over Modbus TCP. The ADAM-4520 belongs to the ADAM-4000 serial family and converts RS-232 to isolated RS-422 or RS-485, a common fix for linking a PC or panel to field devices. The IPC-623 is a 4U, 20-slot rackmount chassis that houses a backplane, CPU card and expansion cards for control room computers.

Ordering Advantech hardware: what we need

Send the full part number with its suffix. Advantech adds letters after the model, as in ADAM-6017-D, to mark the hardware revision, and existing configurations sometimes depend on it. For an IPC chassis, state the backplane, power supply and drive bay arrangement, since these are ordered as specific versions. We supply across the GCC and check part numbers against Advantech documentation.
