Brand:

Micro Motion TA-Series Tantalum Coriolis Flow and Density Meters

Description

Tantalum Coriolis meters for corrosive process fluids

The Micro Motion TA-Series is a family of Coriolis flow and density meters with all wetted parts made of tantalum, aimed at corrosive applications where stainless steel and nickel alloys are not suitable. The sensor measures mass flow, volume flow, density and temperature, and it is offered only with the Micro Motion 5700 field-mount transmitter, which supplies the wide range of input and output options and the Smart Meter Verification diagnostics that can detect corrosion and other process effects.

Where tantalum is chosen

Tantalum is selected for strongly corrosive fluids, typically hot acids, where the sensor would otherwise be limited by material compatibility. General corrosion tables do not account for cyclic stress, so the datasheet advises checking the Micro Motion Corrosion Guide for the actual fluid and concentration. Because the sensor is tied to the 5700, the transmitter brings Smart Meter Verification, an onboard historian and multi-channel I/O. The Micro Motion 5700 is covered on its own page: Micro Motion 5700 Coriolis flow transmitter. Process connections follow ASME B16.5 and EN 1092-1 per the de-rating charts.

What to confirm before ordering

  • Exact fluid, concentration and temperature for a tantalum compatibility check
  • Sensor size, case option (N, P, G, E or T) and process connection with rating
  • Process temperature, because the extended-mount junction box is needed above 176 °F (80 °C)
  • Hazardous area approval and the 5700 transmitter output configuration
  • Pressure de-rating of the selected flange at operating temperature

How the Micro Motion TA-Series works

A Coriolis meter measures mass flow directly. The fluid passes through tubes that are made to vibrate. The moving mass twists the tubes slightly, and sensors measure the twist. The twist gives the mass flow, and the tube frequency gives the density. In the TA-Series the tubes and every part that touches the fluid are made of tantalum, a metal that resists many strong acids. A transmitter turns the signals into flow, density and temperature outputs.

Where the Micro Motion TA-Series is used

  • Hot acid service
  • Chemical process lines
  • Corrosive fluids that damage stainless steel
  • Fluids that damage nickel alloys
  • Batching and transfer of aggressive liquids

Selection checklist for the Micro Motion TA-Series

  • Sensor size from TA010T to TA300T
  • Nominal flow rate
  • Case option, standard or enhanced
  • Process temperature up to 180 degrees C
  • Working pressure and connection rating
  • Hazardous area marking
  • Model 5700 transmitter outputs
  • Corrosion diagnostics

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the TA-Series

Install the sensor so that it stays full of liquid and support the pipework so that no load falls on the sensor. Mount the Model 5700 transmitter, wire the cable and configure the outputs. Zero the meter with no flow. Use the meter verification diagnostics to check the meter over time.

About brand

Coriolis flow and density meters have carried the Micro Motion name since 1977, when the company started in Boulder, USA. A Coriolis meter measures mass flow directly and reads density from the same tubes. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists the Micro Motion ELITE CMF400 Coriolis flow and density meter and the compact G-Series, and sources Micro Motion flow meters by complete model code.

Micro Motion meter families

ELITE is the manufacturer's top performance family for flow and density, and the CMF400 is one of its larger line sizes. The G-Series is a newer, very compact family for general duty. Each sensor is paired with a Coriolis transmitter, and the range also includes density and viscosity meters. Liquids, gases and slurries can all be measured, which is why these meters appear in oil and gas, refining, chemical, food and marine service.

Ordering Micro Motion meters: what we need

A Micro Motion sensor and its transmitter each have their own model code and serial number; send both. For a new meter we need the fluid, flow range, density, viscosity, operating pressure and temperature, line size, process connection and rating, wetted material, hazardous area approval, outputs and protocol. Custody transfer duty in the GCC should be stated up front because it changes the approvals and calibration options requested.
