Brooks Instrument GF040 MultiFlo Gas Mass Flow Controller

Description

One mass flow controller for many gases and ranges

The GF040 is the base model of the Brooks GF40 Series, an elastomer-sealed digital thermal mass flow controller and meter built around the MultiFlo technology. Switching a thermal controller from one gas to another normally relies on simple correction factors, which cannot fully account for differences in viscosity and density. MultiFlo instead draws on a database of gas runs to apply gas-specific correction functions, so the gas and the full-scale range can be changed without removing the device from the line.

Brooks says setup takes under 60 seconds and presents the series for OEMs and users in fields such as solar, biotech and nanotechnology, and for laboratories that change gas or range often. The sensor is Hastelloy, and the meter version has no valve.

How the GF040 model code is built

Position II states whether the device is MultiFlo capable. Position IV picks a normally closed valve, normally open valve or meter. Position V holds the gas code and range, or one of the standard bins numbered SA40 to SA50, from 3 to 10 sccm up to 30001 to 50000 sccm nitrogen equivalent. Fittings run from 9/16-18 UNF through tube compression in inch and metric sizes, BSP, VCR, VCO and NPT. Downstream condition (atmosphere, vacuum or positive pressure) and the seal material are separate positions, and the final position selects the communication and connector combination.

Brooks lists optional general, leak-test traceability, oxygen cleaning, calibration traceability and material certification documents.

What to confirm before ordering

Give us the gas or gases to be run, the range you need now and in future, the pressure upstream and downstream, whether the outlet sees vacuum, the fitting, the seal material and the control protocol. The datasheet notes that dense gases such as argon need roughly 10 psid extra differential pressure, so mention the gas density when sizing the unit.

How the Brooks Instrument GF040 works

A small part of the gas flows through a heated sensor tube. The gas carries heat from one point to another, and the temperature difference shows the mass flow. The controller compares this with the set point and moves the valve. The MultiFlo database corrects the reading for the chosen gas.

About brand

Brooks Instrument makes mass flow controllers, flowmeters and pressure and vacuum instruments for gases and liquids. The industrial chemist Stephen A. Brooks started the business in 1946 as the Brooks Rotameter Company near Philadelphia, building variable area flowmeters. After many years as part of Emerson, Brooks was sold to American Industrial Partners at the end of 2007 and has been a division of Illinois Tool Works (ITW) since January 2012. It is headquartered in Hatfield, Pennsylvania.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Brooks Instrument thermal and Coriolis mass flow controllers and variable area flowmeters for buyers in Oman and the GCC. Instruments are matched from the model code and the gas, range and calibration data on the label.

Where Brooks instruments are used

Brooks mass flow controllers dose gases in analyser systems, catalyst and pilot plant testing, gas blending, burner and combustion control, fuel cell test stands and semiconductor tools. Variable area flowmeters are widely used on purge gas, seal flush, sample and chemical injection lines in oil and gas, refining and petrochemical plants, where a simple local indication without external power is preferred.

Ordering Brooks instruments: what we need

Send the full model code and serial number from the label. Mass flow controllers are calibrated for a specific gas and full-scale flow, so state the gas or gas mixture, flow range, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, process connection, seal material, signal (analog, RS-485, DeviceNet, EtherNet/IP or other) and any hazardous-area requirement. For variable area meters add the fluid, density, viscosity, flow range, connection size, materials and whether alarms or a 4-20 mA output are needed.
