EagleBurgmann Cartex-SN Single Cartridge Mechanical Seal

Description

Pre-assembled single cartridge seals for standard centrifugal and eccentric screw pumps

The EagleBurgmann Cartex-SN single cartridge seal is a pre-assembled, balanced single seal for centrifugal pumps, packing conversions, retrofits and original equipment. EagleBurgmann describes it as an ideal seal for standardisation: no dimensional modification of the seal chamber is needed on centrifugal pumps, the radial installation height is small, and the dynamically loaded O-ring does not damage the shaft because a shaft sleeve is included. Installation is straightforward because the seal arrives as a unit with an assembly fixture.

The Cartex single family comprises the -SN with flush connection, the -SNO without connections for dead-end operation, the -QN for unpressurised quench with a lip seal, the -TN with a throttle ring, and the -Vario with a modified cover for eccentric screw pumps. ANSI-pump variants such as the -ABPN are also listed. Standards and approvals shown on the datasheet are WRAS and UBA (KTW).

Dimensions are published in both millimetres and inches for each shaft diameter from 25 mm (1.000 in) to 100 mm (4.000 in): for example the 25 mm seal has d2 of 43.0 mm, installed length l1 of 67 mm and a cover outside diameter da of 105 mm, while the 100 mm seal has a1 of 6.063 in and da of 8.583 in.

Selection and installation notes

A cartridge seal removes most of the fitting errors of component seals because face compression and setting are fixed at the factory; the assembly fixture holds the seal until it is bolted to the pump and the set screws are tightened. Verify that the stuffing box or seal chamber has enough radial space for the cover, and use the flush or quench connection that matches the liquid: self-flushing for clean liquids, and the -QN or -TN version where a quench is needed to keep the atmosphere side clean or to contain leakage. The face combination sets the limits, so confirm whether the faces are BQ1 or silicon carbide against silicon carbide, because the second pairing is rated for 12 bar and 10 m/s.

For a cartridge seal from another manufacturer see the John Crane Type 5610 cartridge seal.

How the EagleBurgmann Cartex-SN works

A rotating seal face is pressed against a stationary seat by springs. A thin liquid film between the faces keeps leakage low. The whole seal arrives as one cartridge unit with a sleeve, so it slides onto the pump shaft ready to fit.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the Cartex-SN

Slide the cartridge onto the shaft with the assembly fixture in place. Tighten the cover to the seal chamber and then remove the fixture. Check the seal for leakage at regular intervals.
