Brand:

Limitorque QX Smart Quarter-Turn Electric Actuator

Description

Overview

The Limitorque QX is a smart, non-intrusive electric actuator designed for quarter-turn valves such as ball, plug and butterfly valves and for dampers. It brings the operating logic of the long-established Limitorque MX multi-turn actuator into a compact quarter-turn package, so operators who already know the MX menus, the double-sealed enclosure and the diagnostic screens find the same behaviour on a ball valve or a butterfly valve. The Limitorque QX is built for power generation, oil and gas, chemical and water duty, where a valve that fails to move on command is a process, safety or environmental problem and not just a maintenance ticket.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Limitorque QX from Muscat with engineering support, serving refineries, gas plants, power stations, desalination plants and water utilities in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC. If you are replacing pneumatic quarter-turn actuators or standardising on one electric platform for new isolation and control valves, our team can help match the frame size, voltage and control option to the valve torque and the plant network, and can pass you the manufacturer datasheet before an RFQ is issued.

Position Sensing and Self-Test Principle

At the core of the Limitorque QX is an absolute encoder that tracks the output position without a battery. The encoder uses system-on-chip technology with a contactless magnet exciting Hall effect devices, giving redundant 12-bit resolution over 360 degrees. Because the position data is held by the encoder itself, the actuator knows where the valve is even after a long power loss or after the handwheel has been used, and there is no battery to replace and no backup cell to audit during turnaround planning.

The redundancy is part of the built-in self-test (BIST) concept. The actuator keeps working until a number of faults have accumulated and reports the condition on the display instead of failing silently. LimiGard fault protection is standard on every unit and monitors the control logic so that a failure leads to a safe, known state. The electronic torque switch replaces mechanical torque switches, so seating torque and jam protection are set from the local menu rather than by adjusting springs and cams, which removes a common source of drift.

Engineering Design of the Limitorque QX

The Limitorque QX pairs a brushless DC motor with a worm gear set in a cast aluminium housing. Brushless motors eliminate brush sparking, reduce electrical and mechanical noise and shed heat better than brushed motors. A useful practical consequence is that one motor design accepts a global range of supply voltages, single-phase and three-phase AC as well as DC, so the same actuator can be connected to different site supplies without rewinding or swapping the motor. For heavy multi-turn gate and globe valves, the Flowserve Limitorque L120 electric actuator remains the higher-torque choice in the same brand family.

The controls sit in a separate compartment from the terminals, and the enclosure is double sealed to IP68 (20 metres for 168 hours according to the manufacturer technical brochure), with explosion-proof variants available under the major global certification schemes. A graphical dot-matrix display can be rotated 180 degrees to suit the installation angle, and the handwheel is mounted parallel to the display so manual set-up is possible even where space around the valve is limited. Optional Bluetooth wireless connectivity with a range of about 10 metres lets technicians read diagnostics through Limitorque Dashboard software on a laptop or a mobile device.

Key Features

The following points summarise what the Limitorque QX offers engineers who specify actuators for quarter-turn valve automation:

  • A contactless absolute encoder with redundant 12-bit resolution records valve position without any battery backup.
  • Built-in self-test and LimiGard fault protection report faults early and drive the valve to a defined state when a control failure occurs.
  • A brushless DC motor supports single-phase, three-phase and DC supplies, which simplifies spares for multi-site operators.
  • Five frame sizes cover output torque from 100 ft-lb (135 Nm) up to 1,500 ft-lb (2,031 Nm), with minimum operating times from 5 to 60 seconds.
  • A graphical display with rotatable text and diagnostic graphs is available in ten languages listed in the product flier.
  • Network options include Modbus, Foundation Fieldbus H1, DeviceNet, Profibus DP-V1 with redundancy and Profibus PA, with DTM support for Profibus and Foundation Fieldbus.
  • Modulating configurations are offered to EN 15714 Class D duty for continuous control, and the design is intended to meet AWWA C540 for water service.
  • ISO 5210 and MSS SP-102 mounting flanges let the actuator fit standard quarter-turn valve and gearbox interfaces.

Industrial Applications

In Oman the Limitorque QX suits pipeline and gas-gathering isolation valves, tank-farm ball valves, fuel-gas and flare knock-out drum valves, and the many butterfly valves on cooling water and seawater circuits at power and desalination stations. Its sealed enclosure and corrosion-resistant powder coating cope with coastal humidity along the Batinah and Dhofar coasts, while the electronic position sensing is useful where long cable runs and extreme summer heat make pneumatic tubing and instrument air a maintenance burden.

Water utilities can use the same actuator on treatment-plant valves and pumping-station isolation, and industrial users in the Sohar and Salalah free zones can adopt a single actuator family for chemical dosing, process water and utilities. When a project calls for fieldbus control, the Limitorque QX can be specified with the network option that matches the DCS, so commissioning engineers have a single device to configure instead of an actuator plus an external positioner and limit-switch box. Seven Star LLC can assist with datasheet review, frame selection and spares planning for these duties, and teams comparing electric platforms can also review the Rotork IQ3 intelligent electric valve actuator that we list alongside.

About brand

Motor-operated valves in power stations, pipelines and water plants have carried Limitorque nameplates since 1929. The brand covers electric actuators for multi-turn and quarter-turn valves and dampers, from the older electromechanical units to the current MX and QX smart actuators. Seven Star LLC lists the Limitorque QXM, MXFS/QXFS and LQI actuators and supplies Limitorque actuators and spare parts to plants in Oman and the GCC.

Limitorque actuator families

MX is the smart multi-turn actuator for gate and globe valves, and QX is its quarter-turn counterpart for ball, plug and butterfly valves. Both are set up without opening the electrical compartment. The QXM is the limited multi-turn version for short-stroke rising-stem valves such as choke and control valves, with at most 20 drive sleeve turns. MXFS and QXFS are the fail-safe versions, which drive the valve open or closed when power is lost or an emergency shutdown is called. The LQI is listed here as a compact quarter-turn unit.

Ordering Limitorque actuators and parts: what we need

For spare parts, the unit type and size, serial number and order number from the nameplate are essential. For a new actuator, send valve type and size, required torque or thrust, stem details or mounting flange, operating time, supply voltage and frequency, enclosure and hazardous-area requirement, and the control interface, hardwired or fieldbus.

Frequently Asked Questions

What torque range does the Limitorque QX cover?
The manufacturer flier lists five frame sizes, QX-1 to QX-5, with output torque from 135 Nm (100 ft-lb) to 2,031 Nm (1,500 ft-lb). Operating times range from 5 seconds on the smallest frame to 120 seconds on the larger frames.
