Allen-Bradley 5069-OA16 Compact 5000 16-Point AC Output Module
Description
Solid-state 120/240 V AC outputs for Compact 5000 racks
The Allen-Bradley 5069-OA16 is a sixteen-point 120/240 V AC solid-state output module for the Compact 5000 family. It switches loads from 85 to 264 V AC at up to 0.5 A per channel and 4 A per module, with all outputs sharing a common return through the SA power terminal block.
Its typical role is driving small AC solenoids, contactor coils, signal lamps and interposing relays in panels that use mains-voltage control circuits alongside a CompactLogix 5380 controller.

Handling leakage
Solid-state AC outputs leak a little current in the off state, and the data sheet gives a maximum of 1 mA. For high-impedance loads, the manufacturer recommends a loading resistor across the load: 15 kOhm 2 W for 120 V AC operation or 15 kOhm 5 W for 240 V AC operation. The module has no short-circuit protection of its own, so each load circuit should be fused externally.
Selection notes
Where per-channel diagnostics or output protection are required, a different module type is necessary, since this one does not support them. If the loads exceed 0.5 A or mix voltages, use the relay module 5069-OW16. Order the terminal block separately and keep AC modules on an AC SA bus, separated by a 5069-FPD from DC modules. The values here are from the manufacturer technical data and should be confirmed for your project. In a typical panel the module sits in a row of Compact 5000 I/O on one DIN rail, joined by the module bus, and each module has a green/red status indicator and sixteen yellow/red point indicators for commissioning checks.
Remember the surge rating when sizing loads: each point tolerates 5 A for 25 ms, repeatable every 2 s, while the continuous limit is 0.5 A per channel and 4 A per module. Output delay is typically half a cycle, and module power is 100 mA at 18-32 V DC.
Planning the I/O layout for the 5069-OA16
List every AC load the module will drive, with its voltage, steady current and inrush current. Group the loads so that no channel exceeds 0.5 A and the module total stays under 4 A, and check that coil inrush stays within the stated surge rating per point. Because all sixteen outputs share one common through the SA power terminal block, loads on one module should be on the same AC supply; loads fed from different supplies or phases belong on separate modules or on the relay module mentioned above. Leave spare channels on each module where the panel design allows, so that future loads can be added without rearranging the rack.
Remember that the module reports field power loss but not per-channel faults. If the process needs to know that a particular solenoid or contactor has actually operated, plan a feedback signal from the field device to an input module, and write the controller logic to compare the commanded output with that feedback. This is a common approach for critical valves and motor starters where a failed coil must raise an alarm.
Installation and commissioning steps
- Fit the module in the Compact 5000 row on the DIN rail and install the removable terminal block ordered separately.
- Wire the SA power feed for the AC group, keeping AC wiring separate from DC signal wiring in the panel ducting.
- Fuse each load circuit externally, since the module has no short-circuit protection of its own.
- Add loading resistors across high-impedance loads where the off-state leakage could keep them energised, as recommended above.
- Configure the module in the controller project, then force or toggle each output in turn while observing the status indicators and the field device response.
Operating conditions in Gulf control panels
The module is rated for 0 to +60 C in operation and 5 to 95 percent non-condensing humidity. Control panels in Oman, particularly in outdoor kiosks or poorly ventilated MCC rooms, can approach this upper temperature in summer. Measure the temperature inside the panel during commissioning on a hot day, keep the dissipation of all modules in mind when planning panel cooling, and avoid locations where condensation can form when air conditioning cycles. Dust ingress into panels is common near construction and desert sites, so keep panel doors closed and include terminal tightness and cleanliness checks in planned maintenance.
Information to include in your RFQ
State the catalog number 5069-OA16 and the quantity, and add the 5069-RTB terminal block and any 5069-FPD field potential distributor needed for your rack layout. Mention the controller in use, the AC supply voltage, and a short description of the loads, so the choice between this solid-state module and the 5069-OW16 relay module can be checked against the Rockwell Automation technical data.
For larger projects, attach the I/O list or a marked-up panel drawing showing how many AC outputs are needed per rack. This allows the number of modules, terminal blocks and field potential distributors to be counted once, and helps spot loads that would be better served by the relay module.

About brand
Catalog numbers beginning 1756, 1734, 1746 or 5069 are read at a glance by anyone who maintains Allen-Bradley control panels. The brand, the control hardware name of Rockwell Automation, dates back to 1903 in Milwaukee, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Allen-Bradley PLC and I/O modules, communication adapters and PowerFlex drives for plants in Oman, matching catalog number, series letter and firmware against the manufacturer's documentation.
Allen-Bradley product families listed here
Current controller platforms on this page are ControlLogix, with the 1756-L85E ControlLogix 5580 controller and the 1756-PA72 chassis power supply, and CompactLogix 5380, with the 5069-L320ER and 5069-L340ERM. Distributed I/O is represented by POINT I/O: the 1734-AENTR dual-port EtherNet/IP adapter and the 1734-IB8 digital input module. Where Allen-Bradley hardware is used
ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers run packaged equipment and plant utilities: compressor and pump skids, water and wastewater plants, power distribution, material handling and packaging lines. PowerFlex drives control pumps, fans and conveyors. Many SLC 500 racks are still in service.
Ordering Allen-Bradley modules and drives: what we need
Send the full catalog number, the series letter and, for controllers and communication modules, the firmware revision printed on the side label. Compatibility with an existing project depends on these. For PowerFlex drives, give the complete catalog string, which encodes voltage, current rating, enclosure and options, plus the motor nameplate data. For SLC 500 parts, tell us the rack size and processor so that we can check slot and power supply loading in the manufacturer's manuals. A label photo avoids most mistakes.
