Adam Equipment AE 403 IP68 Stainless Steel Weighing Indicator

The Adam AE 403 is a stainless steel weighing indicator with an IP68 rating for dust and water. It connects to load cell platforms, pallet beams and floor scales, turning them into weighing, counting and checkweighing stations for loading docks, food and agricultural plants, shipping and receiving areas and workshops.

A rugged indicator for platforms and load cells

The AE 403 is hard-wired with a mains lead, so the plug can sit inside a waterproof socket, and an internal rechargeable battery keeps it running when mains power is not available. A backlit LCD with 40 mm digits changes colour when the weight is over, under or within limits, and a capacity tracker helps the operator avoid overloads. The included bracket allows wall or vertical-surface mounting.

Functions include checkweighing with audible alarm, parts counting with preset sample sizes (internal counting resolution 1:1,600,000), percentage weighing, display and peak hold, net/gross, selectable digital filtering for vibration or animal weighing, user-selectable scale division and zero tracking. RS-232 sends data to a printer or computer and external calibration allows verification with weights.

Adam lists an RS-232 cable, an RS-232-to-USB adapter, an ATP 2 thermal printer, an AIP impact printer, a relay box, a light tower and relay kit, an indicator stand and the AdamDU data collection program, which can gather data from up to eight Adam balances. The AE 403 is named by Adam as compatible with its PT platforms and AELP pallet beams. If labels must be printed with each weighing, the AE 503 has an integrated label printer.

Selecting AE 403 or AE 403M

The AE 403M carries an EC type approval and is the version to quote for legal-for-trade use; note that it is specified for a single load cell at 1:6,000 resolution, whereas the standard AE 403 supports four load cells at 1:80,000. Installation notes: the AE 403 can be mounted on a wall or other vertical surface with the supplied bracket, or placed on an indicator stand, and because the mains lead is hard-wired, the plug can sit inside a waterproof socket as Adam describes; route cables downward so that water cannot run along them into the connections. After connecting the load cells, set the scale division and capacity, calibrate externally with test weights and check zero and span at regular intervals. Typical weighing stations built around the AE 403

The AE 403 is most useful where a scale must work in wet, dusty or wash-down areas that would quickly damage a painted or plastic indicator. Typical stations include receiving and dispatch scales at loading docks, platform scales in food and agricultural processing, pallet-beam weighing in warehouses and general workshop scales. In each case the indicator is paired with load cells, a platform or pallet beams, and the complete system is set up for the job it has to do: simple weighing of goods in and out, counting of identical parts, checkweighing of packs against upper and lower limits, or percentage weighing when products are made up to a target. The stainless steel housing and IP68 rating make it a reasonable choice where the area is cleaned with water or where the scale stands outdoors under a canopy.

Selection considerations

The first decision is whether the scale will be used for trade. When goods are sold or invoiced by weight, the EC type-approved AE 403M is the version to consider, and its single load cell configuration and lower resolution should be checked against the intended platform. For internal process weighing, the standard AE 403 offers more load cell inputs and higher resolution. Next, consider the load cells and platform themselves, because the usable accuracy of the system is set as much by the mechanics as by the indicator. Operation and day-to-day practice

Operators benefit most from the colour change at the limits during checkweighing, since a glance is enough to know whether a pack is accepted, light or heavy. The capacity tracker helps prevent overloading of the platform, which protects the load cells from damage. Keep the platform free of debris that could touch the frame, use tare for containers and pallets, and check zero at the start of each shift. Periodic external calibration with certified test weights keeps the scale dependable, and records of each check are useful for internal quality audits.

Use in Oman and GCC conditions

Loading bays and processing halls in Oman and the Gulf can be hot, humid and dusty, with frequent wash-down in food plants. The indicator should be kept within its operating temperature range, so avoid mounting it in direct sun on outdoor docks or next to hot equipment. Route load cell and mains cables downward and protect them from forklifts and trolleys. In coastal facilities, rinse salt and dust off the stainless steel housing as part of routine cleaning to keep it in good condition.
