Description

The Swagelok SS-1GS4 is a 1G series toggle valve: a compact on-off valve that a technician opens or closes with a flick of a nylon lever instead of several turns of a handle. It has a 316 stainless steel body, 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting ends on both sides, a soft PTFE stem tip and a 0.125 in. (3.2 mm) orifice that gives a maximum Cv of 0.20. It suits sampling points, purge lines and instrument panels where quick, repeatable shutoff matters more than fine throttling.

Quick shutoff with a soft seat

A toggle valve moves the stem a short distance with a lever, so it opens and closes in a fraction of a second and the lever position shows the state of the valve at a glance. The PTFE stem tip seals bubble-tight against the seat at low pressure, which is why the catalog rates the series for 300 psig (20.6 bar) rather than the thousands of psig of the needle valves. The stem has an O-ring seal that needs no packing adjustment, and a PTFE-coated spring holds the stem tip on the seat.

The catalog lists the SS-1GS4 at 2.26 in. (57.4 mm) overall length and about 2.81 in. (71.4 mm) height with the lever open, which is useful when you plan panel space; verify against the dimension table for your drawing.

Where it fits and where it does not

The 0.20 Cv suits analyser sample lines, calibration gas hook-ups, pressure-gauge isolation and small utility connections. It is a shutoff valve, not a throttling valve: use a needle or metering valve where you must set a flow. Because the rating is 300 psig and the temperature limit is 200 F, it is not meant for steam or high-pressure hydraulic lines. The catalog also offers panel-mount nuts, angle-pattern bodies with the -A suffix and brass bodies with a B- prefix, each under its own code.

Pneumatically actuated versions of the series are separate catalog items, so do not assume a manual valve can be upgraded in place.

Decoding the order code

SS is 316 stainless steel, 1G is the toggle-valve series with the 0.125 in. orifice, S means Swagelok tube-fitting ends and 4 is the 1/4 in. tube size. The neighbouring codes show the logic: SS-1GS6 is 3/8 in. with a 0.250 in. orifice and 0.70 Cv, SS-1GM4 is 1/4 in. male NPT and SS-1GF4 is 1/4 in. female NPT. Tube-fitting ends need annealed tubing and one and one-quarter turns of the nut from finger-tight on a 1/4 in. size.

Specify the exact code if you need the NPT or metric version, because the pressure rating and Cv differ between orifice sizes.

Swagelok is the American maker of tube fittings and small-bore valves, best known for its two-ferrule compression tube fitting. Fred A. Lennon and Cullen B. Crawford founded it in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 1947 as Crawford Fitting Company to make that fitting. Lennon bought the whole business and the patent in 1948, and the company has been based in Solon, Ohio, since the mid-1960s.

A Swagelok part number can be read directly. In SS-810-6, "SS" is 316 stainless steel, "810" means a 1/2 in. tube fitting (8 sixteenths of an inch, 10 series), and "-6" is a union. A suffix such as "-8" adds a 1/2 in. NPT end, and "M0" marks metric tube, as in SS-12M0-6 for 12 mm. Tube fittings must be made up the same way every time: finger-tight, then 1 1/4 turns for most sizes. A gap inspection gauge confirms the fitting has been pulled up.
