Brand:

Donaldson X920006 T.R.A.P. Bulk Tank Breather

Description

A self-regenerating tank breather with 3 micron filtration and overfill check valve

The Donaldson X920006 T.R.A.P. (Thermally Reactive Advanced Protection) breather protects the contents of a storage tank from airborne moisture and particles. It combines a high capacity 3 micron air filter with a deliquescent breather that dries itself when air is expelled from the tank, and the sheet says this self-regenerating action gives longer life and lower airflow restriction than typical silica gel breathers.

It has a 1 1/2 inch NPT female connection and an overfill safety check valve, works with all diesel fuels and lubricants and is suitable for above and below ground tanks, mobile service trucks and indoor or outdoor use in cold temperatures.

Sizing and safety

Donaldson recommends the breather for tanks up to 10,000 gal (40,000 liters); larger tanks may need several units. It may only be installed on tanks with emergency vents, and it should be sized so that the clean pressure drop is less than half the tank working pressure. The sheet points to API 2000 to calculate the required flow rates and offers sizing help.

Never exceed the tank pressure or vacuum rating. Tanks with a 4 inch (100 mm) or larger elbow-shaped breather pipe often have extremely low vacuum ratings and are unsuitable for breather filters. Check the tank name plate against the flow chart: use the maximum flow into the tank to validate the pressure rating and the flow out of the tank for the vacuum rating.

Installation and service

The breather fits any standard 1 1/2 inch NPT male connection and fittings can adapt it up or down in size. Replace the spin-on element P923075 and watch the restriction gauge if the optional kit X220074 is fitted. A label on the unit has a space to record the installation date, which helps schedule the next change.

The housing is ABS with urethane end caps, a stainless steel adapter and a brass relief valve, so there are no moving parts to maintain apart from the relief function. The sheet lists above and below ground tanks and mobile service trucks as applications, which are the places where airborne dust and humidity enter through the tank vent, and that is why a breather is specified at the tank rather than at the pump.

How the X920006 T.R.A.P. Breather Works

Every storage tank breathes. When fuel or oil is pumped out, or when the tank cools at night, air is drawn in through the vent; when the tank is filled, or warms in the sun, air is pushed out. Without a breather, each inward breath carries dust and humid air into the tank, and the moisture condenses on the cool walls and collects as free water under the fuel. Water and particles are two of the main causes of injector wear, microbial growth in diesel and lubricant breakdown.

The X920006 handles both contaminants in one assembly. Incoming air first passes through the high capacity spin-on air filter, which Donaldson rates at 97 percent efficiency at 3 microns. It then passes through a deliquescent drying stage that takes moisture out of the air before it reaches the tank headspace. When the tank exhales, the outgoing dry air passes back through the drying stage and carries moisture with it. This is the self-regenerating action described in the T.R.A.P. (Thermally Reactive Advanced Protection) name, and it is why Donaldson states a longer life and lower restriction than typical silica gel breathers, which only adsorb and must be replaced once saturated. The overfill safety check valve opens at 10 mbar (4 inches H2O) to relieve pressure if the tank is overfilled.

X920006 Dimensions and Flow Performance

Preventive maintenance interval Every four months, or as the indicator requires

Selection & Ordering Guide

  • Tank size – one X920006 is recommended for most tanks up to 10,000 gal (40,000 litres). Larger tanks may need several units in parallel.
  • Flow – use API 2000 to calculate the required breathing flow from the maximum fill and withdrawal rates and the thermal breathing of the tank. Combined inlet and outlet flow must stay within 400 gpm (1,500 lpm).
  • Pressure and vacuum – read the tank name plate. Use the maximum flow into the tank to check the pressure rating and the flow out of the tank to check the vacuum rating, and keep the clean pressure drop below half the tank working pressure.
  • Connection – the breather has a 1½" NPT female thread; use fittings to adapt to the vent size.
  • Spares – order P923075 replacement elements and, if required, the X220074 restriction gauge kit with the X920006 assembly.

Installation & Maintenance

Fit the X920006 vertically on the tank vent connection, only on tanks that also have emergency venting. Write the installation date on the label provided. The housing separates at a marked joint for servicing, so the spin-on element can be changed without removing the whole unit. Donaldson’s maintenance schedule calls for service every four months on a preventive basis, or sooner if the restriction indicator shows the limit. Do not install on tanks with a 4 inch (100 mm) or larger elbow-shaped breather pipe, as these tanks often have very low vacuum ratings.

Typical Applications in Oman & the GCC

Desert dust and high humidity along the coast make tank breathers a cost-effective upgrade in Oman. The X920006 suits diesel day tanks for generators, bulk lubricant tanks in workshops and lube rooms, fuel tanks at construction and mining sites, mobile service trucks, and above or below ground fuel storage at fleet depots and ports.

About brand

Donaldson is the American filtration company founded in Minnesota in 1915. It started when Frank Donaldson Sr. built an air cleaner for a tractor engine that kept failing in dusty fields. It is now headquartered in Bloomington, Minnesota, and makes filters and filtration systems for engines, hydraulics, compressed air and gases, dust collection and process liquids.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Donaldson compressed air dryers and filters, gas filter housings, activated carbon adsorbers, hydraulic and fuel filtration and dust collectors, and supply them and their replacement elements in Oman and the GCC.

Compressed air quality is set by ISO 8573-1 classes for particles, water and oil. A typical instrument air system uses a coarse filter and a fine coalescing filter before the dryer, an adsorption dryer for a low pressure dew point (for example -40 °C), and a dust filter after it. An activated carbon stage removes oil vapour where the air touches food or is breathed. Heatless dryers use some of the dry air to regenerate the desiccant, while heat-regenerated and zero-purge types save that air on larger systems.

Where Donaldson products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Donaldson filters and dryers are used for instrument and plant air in oil and gas, refining, power and desalination plants, for breathing air, in food and pharmaceutical production, on hydraulic systems and fuel storage, and in cement and bulk handling.
