Allen-Bradley 5094-IF8 FLEX 5000 8-Channel Analog Input Module

Description

Eight single-ended analog inputs with 24-bit converters

The Allen-Bradley 5094-IF8 is an eight-channel single-ended analog input module for voltage (plus or minus 10 V, 0 to 10 V, 0 to 5 V) or current (0 to 20 mA, 4 to 20 mA). It uses two 24-bit multiplexed sigma-delta converters and reports 32-bit floating point data with timestamps and CIP Sync.

HART handheld communicators can be connected to the current loops, and open-circuit detection, onboard alarming and scaling to engineering units are built in. The module works over the full -40 to +70 C range of the FLEX 5000 family.

Filtering and speed

Sampling can be tuned between a very fast 62.5 kHz notch filter for rapid changes and the 10 Hz setting that gives 16-bit resolution and good rejection of mains noise. The scan time of 360 microseconds per channel and 1.4 ms per module shows that the converters multiplex the eight inputs; the minimum RPI follows from the number of enabled channels.

Selection notes

Inputs share no isolation from each other, so loops must be referenced to the same SA supply and the cable shields grounded correctly. For universal inputs such as RTDs or thermocouples the 5094-IY8 is the matching module. Order the mounting base and terminal base separately and confirm all details in the manufacturer data.

The module uses two 24-bit multiplexed converters and scans 360 us per channel, or 1.4 ms for all eight. Open-circuit detection in 4-20 mA mode takes under 1 s, and filters range from a 5 Hz notch up to 62.5 kHz, giving room to trade noise rejection against response time.

Typical application context

The 5094-IF8 is used wherever a FLEX 5000 I/O system has to bring standard field signals into a Logix controller: pressure and level transmitters, flow meters, position feedback, speed references and other voltage or current outputs from field devices. Because the module accepts both voltage and current ranges, one module type can serve mixed signal lists in a remote I/O cabinet, which simplifies engineering and spare-part handling across a plant.

Floating point data with timestamps is useful where analog values are compared with events from other modules, for example in sequence-of-events analysis, trend recording or diagnostics after a trip. HART handheld communicators connected to the current loops let instrument technicians check and configure transmitters without disconnecting the wiring.

Choosing the right input configuration

Decide for each channel whether voltage or current mode is required and which range matches the transmitter output. Current mode with the live-zero range is generally preferred for longer cable runs and where wire-break detection matters, because the open-circuit detection can then report a broken loop to the controller. Voltage ranges suit short connections to local equipment that provides a voltage signal.

Filter settings should be chosen with the process in mind. Slow process values such as temperatures or tank levels benefit from the lower notch settings with stronger noise rejection, while fast signals need the higher notch settings and a short or disabled digital filter. Onboard alarming and scaling to engineering units reduce the amount of logic needed in the controller program.

Installation and commissioning considerations

Plan the mounting base and removable terminal base as separate items, and confirm the orientation in which the module will be mounted. Use the mechanical keying to prevent a wrong module being inserted into a position, and set the electronic keying in the programming software according to your site practice. Because the inputs are not isolated from each other, review the grounding and shield concept of the cabinet before wiring, and keep analog cables apart from power and motor cables.

During commissioning, check each channel with a calibrated signal source, verify the scaling and alarm limits, and test the open-circuit detection by disconnecting a loop. Confirm that the RPI chosen in the controller suits the number of enabled channels and the filter settings.

How to specify your request

State the catalog number 5094-IF8 or 5094-IF8XT if that catalog number is required, together with the quantity. Mention whether mounting bases and terminal bases are also required, and list the controller and adapter in use so that compatibility within the FLEX 5000 system can be checked.

It also helps to include the signal list for the module: the type of each field device, the required range per channel, and whether HART access to the current loops is needed. If the module replaces an existing unit, quote the catalog number printed on the installed module. With this information the offer can be prepared for the correct catalog number and the complete set of bases.

About brand

Catalog numbers beginning 1756, 1734, 1746 or 5069 are read at a glance by anyone who maintains Allen-Bradley control panels. The brand, the control hardware name of Rockwell Automation, dates back to 1903 in Milwaukee, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Allen-Bradley PLC and I/O modules, communication adapters and PowerFlex drives for plants in Oman, matching catalog number, series letter and firmware against the manufacturer's documentation.

Allen-Bradley product families listed here

Current controller platforms on this page are ControlLogix, with the 1756-L85E ControlLogix 5580 controller and the 1756-PA72 chassis power supply, and CompactLogix 5380, with the 5069-L320ER and 5069-L340ERM. Distributed I/O is represented by POINT I/O: the 1734-AENTR dual-port EtherNet/IP adapter and the 1734-IB8 digital input module. Where Allen-Bradley hardware is used

ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers run packaged equipment and plant utilities: compressor and pump skids, water and wastewater plants, power distribution, material handling and packaging lines. PowerFlex drives control pumps, fans and conveyors. Many SLC 500 racks are still in service.

Ordering Allen-Bradley modules and drives: what we need

Send the full catalog number, the series letter and, for controllers and communication modules, the firmware revision printed on the side label. Compatibility with an existing project depends on these. For PowerFlex drives, give the complete catalog string, which encodes voltage, current rating, enclosure and options, plus the motor nameplate data. For SLC 500 parts, tell us the rack size and processor so that we can check slot and power supply loading in the manufacturer's manuals. A label photo avoids most mistakes.
