Basler Electric AVC63-12 Analog Voltage Regulator

Description

A rugged 12-amp analog voltage regulator that fits one device on the shelf

The Basler Electric AVC63-12 is a potted, analog automatic voltage regulator with a PWM power stage that delivers 63 Vdc at 12 Adc continuous. Basler describes the AVC line as the universal regulator that reduces inventory to one device on the shelf, because jumpers select single-phase or three-phase sensing, 1X or 2X V/Hz limiting and the nominal sensing voltage.

It holds voltage within plus or minus 0.5 percent of setpoint, stays accurate up to 20 percent THD from six-SCR loads, and responds in under 4 ms. The AVC63-12 shares its bulletin with the AVC125-10, a 125 Vdc at 10 Adc sibling; this page covers the AVC63-12 only.

AVC63-12 features

  • Voltage regulation accuracy +/-0.5 percent, held to 20 percent THD
  • 63 Vdc at 12 Adc continuous output; 125 Vdc forcing at 24 Adc for ten seconds
  • 1X or 2X V/Hz limiting (jumper selectable) with selectable slope characteristics
  • Single-phase or three-phase average sensing (jumper selectable); 1 A or 5 A paralleling CT input

AVC63-12 or AVC125-10?

Choose by the exciter field. The AVC63-12 supplies up to 12 Adc at 63 Vdc with a minimum field resistance of 5.25 ohm; the AVC125-10 supplies 10 Adc at 125 Vdc for fields of 12.5 ohm minimum. Then set the sensing range (95 to 139 V or 180 to 264 V) and frequency option (50/60 Hz or 400 Hz) at order. For smaller exciters Basler lists the AVC63-4 and AVC63-7 families, and we also quote the AVC63-4A separately. Send the generator nameplate and the old regulator label for a check.

Installation and adjustment notes

The regulator is potted, so mount it in the generator terminal box or a control panel with the field wiring, sensing and optional external voltage adjustment rheostat connected according to the connection diagram in the instruction manual. Choose single-phase or three-phase sensing and the V/Hz setting with the jumpers before the first run. Overexcitation shutdown trips on field voltage after a delay, so check exciter field resistance against the 5.25 ohm minimum before connecting.

Where the AVC63-12 fits

It is a retrofit and spare-part item for brushless or PMG-excited generators on diesel and gas sets, and for sets that must work with nonlinear loads such as six-SCR loads, since accuracy holds to 20 percent THD. The -40 C to 70 C operating range is the printed rating; for generator terminal boxes in Gulf summers, confirm the actual box temperature against it.

Installation and selection notes

Set the jumpers for single or three-phase sensing, the V/Hz limiting and the nominal voltage before powering the regulator, and confirm the field voltage and current of the generator. Mount the potted unit securely, keep the sensing and field wiring separate where the manual advises and follow the wiring diagram for the machine.

About brand

Basler Electric is an American maker of excitation, voltage regulation, generator control and protection products, founded in 1942 by Carl Basler in his father's garage in Highland, Illinois. Early work was rewinding and repairing electrical equipment, followed by custom transformers from 1945 and the SRA voltage regulator in 1959. Basler has plants in Highland, Taylor (Texas), Piedras Negras (Mexico) and Suzhou (China), and Littelfuse completed its acquisition of the company in December 2025.
