Brand:

Allen-Bradley 5069-OF8 Compact 5000 8-Ch Analog Output

Description

Eight analog outputs in one Compact 5000 slot

The Allen-Bradley 5069-OF8 doubles the density of the 5069-OF4: eight voltage or current outputs in one module, using the same 16-bit D/A converters in two groups of four. Each channel is selectable as plus or minus 10 V, 0 to 10 V, 0 to 5 V, 0 to 20 mA or 4 to 20 mA.

The trade-off is power and scan time: the OF8 dissipates up to 5.3 W, draws 250 mA from SA power and needs 2.0 ms to update all eight channels, against 1.0 ms for four channels on the OF4. For sites with many valve positioners per panel the saving in slots outweighs the extra scan time.

Heat and layout

With 5.3 W per module, a row of OF8 modules produces noticeable heat inside a small enclosure, so allow for the rated 60 C ambient limit and the thermal dissipation of 18.1 BTU/hr per module. The SA power draw of 250 mA is also higher than the OF4 and should be added to the SA bus budget, which is limited by the 10 A rating at the SA terminal block.

Choosing between OF4 and OF8

Take the OF8 where panel space or cost per channel matters and one update time of 2.0 ms is acceptable. Where fast response is needed on a few channels, the four-channel OF4 or an isolated module such as the 5069-OF4IH may suit better. Confirm the series and terminal blocks, and check the figures against the manufacturer publication.

Scan time depends on how many channels are used: 1.0 ms for groups 0 to 3 and 2.0 ms for all eight channels. Output ranges are the same as the OF4, with shielded cable required and overvoltage protection to plus or minus 32 V DC, so one wiring standard serves both modules.

Planning the output channels

Start by listing every analogue output the system needs, together with the device each one drives and the signal it expects. Valve positioners, variable-speed drives, recorders and setpoint inputs on packaged equipment often use different ranges, and the 5069-OF8 lets each channel be set individually, so a mixed list can still share one module. Group channels so that loops needing the quickest update sit together, and keep spare channels for future expansion rather than filling every module on day one.

Because the outputs share a common reference and the module has no channel-to-channel isolation, check whether any receiving device sits on a different ground or power system. Where that is the case, the isolated module mentioned above, or a separate signal-isolation arrangement, may be the better route than mixing those loops on the OF8.

Wiring and commissioning steps

  • Use shielded cable as stated in the specifications, and terminate the shield according to the Rockwell wiring guidance so that noise is drained in one place.
  • Route analogue output cables away from motor and drive power cables, crossing them at right angles where they must meet.
  • Add the module’s SA power draw to the SA budget for the bank before switching on, and confirm the SA supply sits within the stated voltage range.
  • Configure each channel range and the fault and program-mode behaviour in the controller project before outputs are enabled.
  • Force a few test values on every channel and confirm the receiving device responds correctly, including at the minimum and maximum of the range.
  • Check that open-circuit or short-circuit diagnostics are reported to the controller as expected.

Cabinet environment in the Gulf

Control panels in Omani plants, pump stations and remote sites often face ambient temperatures that leave little margin against the module’s operating limit, especially when cabinets stand in the sun or in poorly ventilated rooms. Account for the power dissipation of every module in the heat calculation, keep spacing for natural convection, and plan enclosure cooling where needed. Keep cabinet doors closed and cable entries sealed against fine dust, and take care in humid coastal areas that the non-condensing humidity limit is respected during shutdowns and cool nights.

Maintenance and quotation details

Routine checks are simple: review module status and channel diagnostics in the controller, confirm the removable terminal block is fully seated and that terminals are tight, and periodically verify the output signal at the field device with a calibrated meter. Keep a copy of the module configuration with the controller project backup.

When requesting a quotation, give the catalog number 5069-OF8, the quantity, whether the 5069-RTB terminal block is also needed, and the controller or adapter the module will sit beside, so the offer can be checked against your system.

About brand

Catalog numbers beginning 1756, 1734, 1746 or 5069 are read at a glance by anyone who maintains Allen-Bradley control panels. The brand, the control hardware name of Rockwell Automation, dates back to 1903 in Milwaukee, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Allen-Bradley PLC and I/O modules, communication adapters and PowerFlex drives for plants in Oman, matching catalog number, series letter and firmware against the manufacturer's documentation.

Allen-Bradley product families listed here

Current controller platforms on this page are ControlLogix, with the 1756-L85E ControlLogix 5580 controller and the 1756-PA72 chassis power supply, and CompactLogix 5380, with the 5069-L320ER and 5069-L340ERM. Distributed I/O is represented by POINT I/O: the 1734-AENTR dual-port EtherNet/IP adapter and the 1734-IB8 digital input module. Allen-Bradley drives listed include the PowerFlex 525 and PowerFlex 755. For installed systems there are SLC 500 parts: the 1746-A10 chassis, 1746-NI16I analog input module, 1747-ASB remote I/O adapter, 1747-KE interface and 1747-M13 memory module.

Where Allen-Bradley hardware is used

ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers run packaged equipment and plant utilities: compressor and pump skids, water and wastewater plants, power distribution, material handling and packaging lines. PowerFlex drives control pumps, fans and conveyors. Many SLC 500 racks are still in service.

Ordering Allen-Bradley modules and drives: what we need

Send the full catalog number, the series letter and, for controllers and communication modules, the firmware revision printed on the side label. Compatibility with an existing project depends on these. For PowerFlex drives, give the complete catalog string, which encodes voltage, current rating, enclosure and options, plus the motor nameplate data. For SLC 500 parts, tell us the rack size and processor so that we can check slot and power supply loading in the manufacturer's manuals. A label photo avoids most mistakes.
