Timken SAF Split Block Mounted Spherical Roller Bearing Pillow Blocks

Description

Heavy-duty split pillow blocks with a high-capacity spherical roller bearing

The Timken SAF pillow block is an inch-series split-block housing for heavy industrial shafts. A cast-iron cap and base, machined as a matched pair and located by dowels, carry a Timken spherical roller bearing with a triple-ring labyrinth seal. Timken sells it in two styles: SAF, and the larger SDAF for extremely heavy duty. Cast steel (SAFS, FSAFS, SDAFS) and ductile iron housings are offered where a stronger casting than standard cast iron is needed; Timken describes these as up to twice as strong.

The shaft range runs from 1 3/8 to 19 1/2 inch standard sizes, with custom shaft sizes up to 40 inches and metric bores available. The spherical roller bearing inside tolerates plus or minus 1.5 degrees of misalignment without a loss of rated life. Typical users listed by Timken include coal-fired power generation, mining, aggregate and cement, metal mills, pulp and paper, sawmills, water treatment, food processing, industrial fans and blowers and movable bridges.

Choosing the series, seal and construction

Tapered-bore designs (225, 226, 230K, 231K, 232K) mount with an adapter assembly and let the bearing be positioned along a standard commercial shaft; straight-bore designs (222, 223, 231) give better axial location on a stepped shaft. The last letters of the code give the construction: FXOP fixed open, FXCL fixed closed, FLOP float open and FLCL float closed. Open means the shaft continues through the housing; closed means it ends inside. A float unit is converted by leaving out the stabilizing ring, which is why one housing can serve both positions.

The standard labyrinth suits most conditions. In extremely contaminated or abrasive surroundings Timken offers the TG isolator seal, the DUSTAC V-shaped nitrile ring that rotates with the shaft, or the grease-filled RLS wedge cavity. Examples in the 5-series housing table include SAF 509 on bearing 22209K with SNW-09 adapter and SR-9-9 stabilizing ring, and SAF 511 on 22211K with SNW-11 and SR-11-0.

What to confirm before ordering

State the housing series and size, shaft diameter, tapered or straight bore, fixed or float, open or closed, cast iron, ductile iron or cast steel, and the seal. Timken also publishes SAF interchange charts. Complete assemblies or individual parts can be quoted. See also Electric Motors, Pumps and Turbines for other Timken items.

About brand

The Timken Company is an American manufacturer of bearings and power transmission products. Henry Timken patented an improved tapered roller bearing in 1898 and incorporated the company in St. Louis in 1899; it moved to Canton, Ohio, in 1901 and is headquartered in North Canton, Ohio. Timken is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and describes itself as the world's largest maker of tapered roller bearings.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Timken bearings, mounted units and lubrication products for maintenance departments and workshops in Oman and the GCC.

Ordering Timken bearings: what we need

Give the complete part number stamped on the bearing, including any prefix and suffix. Inch-series tapered roller bearings have separate numbers for cone and cup, so quote both. If the marking is worn, measure bore, outside diameter and width and tell us the machine and shaft position. For housed units give the housing type, shaft size and locking method. State the quantity and any precision class or special clearance required.

Facts checked against Timken's SEC filings and published company histories, October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SAF and SDAF?
SDAF is the larger, extra-heavy-duty block of the family; SAF is the standard split pillow block. Both hold Timken spherical roller bearings.
What do FXOP, FXCL, FLOP and FLCL mean?
Fixed open, fixed closed, float open and float closed. Closed means the shaft ends in the housing; open means it passes through.
How is a fixed block converted to float?
By removing the stabilizing ring; a float unit allows axial movement up to 3/8 inch.
What shaft sizes are standard?
1 3/8 to 19 1/2 inches, with custom sizes to 40 inches and metric bores available, per the Timken sell sheet.
Is Seven Star LLC a distributor of Timken?
No, Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat that sources against your quoted code.
