SKF LAGD 125/WA2 SYSTEM 24 Gas Driven Lubricator, ATEX

A gas driven lubricator that needs no power and no tools to set

The SKF LAGD 125/WA2 belongs to the SKF SYSTEM 24 LAGD series of gas driven single point automatic lubricators. The 125 ml unit is filled with SKF LGWA 2, the high load, extreme pressure, wide temperature range grease, and is supplied ready to use. Tool-free activation and time setting allow easy and accurate adjustment of lubricant flow, with a dispense period adjustable from 1 to 12 months.

A gas cell produces inert gas that pushes a specially shaped piston, so no battery or mains supply is needed; the unit can be stopped or adjusted if required. A transparent lubricant container allows visual inspection of the dispense rate, and the compact size suits restricted installations. Variants and accessories

The same series offers 60 and 125 ml units with other lubricants. In the 125 ml size SKF lists LAGD 125/WA2, LAGD 125/EM2, LAGD 125/GB2 (biodegradable grease), LAGD 125/HB2, LAGD 125/HQ2, LAGD 125/WM2, LAGD 125/FG2 and LAGD 125/FQ2 (food grade, NSF H1 greases), plus chain oils and an empty unit for oil filling (LAGD 125/U). The 60 ml size has its own set of codes, such as LAGD 60/WA2. Accessories include angle connections, extensions, nipples, tube connections, flexible tubes, brushes, a clamp, a protection base and a cap. SKF DialSet helps to calculate the correct dispense rate.

Selecting and installing

Do not choose a setting longer than 6 months when the ambient temperature is constantly between 40 and 60 C, because SKF advises this for optimum performance. Grease feed lines are limited to 300 mm. Fit the unit by screwing it onto the R 1/4 connection or an adapter nipple, then activate it and set the dial. Replace the lubricator when it is empty, and do not use it beyond its 2 year storage life. SKF gives a separate note for constant ambient temperatures between 40 and 60 C.

Why single point automatic lubrication helps

Manual greasing with a grease gun depends on people reaching every point at the right interval with the right quantity. In practice, some bearings receive too much grease, others too little, and points that are hard or unsafe to reach are often missed. A single point automatic lubricator such as the LAGD 125/WA2 delivers small amounts of grease continuously over the chosen period, which keeps a steadier lubricant film in the bearing and reduces the risk of contamination entering between manual services.

It also reduces the number of times technicians need to approach running machinery, climb to elevated points or enter restricted areas. This is a practical benefit on conveyors, fans, pumps and motors spread across a large site, and on cranes or equipment where access requires a permit or shutdown.

Why LGWA 2 grease

SKF LGWA 2 is described above as a high load, extreme pressure, wide temperature range grease. These properties suit rolling bearings in general industrial machinery that see moderate to heavy loads, occasional shock and varying temperatures, such as conveyor pulleys, fan bearings and pump bearings. Where the existing bearing grease is different, compatibility should be checked before switching, and where a food grade or biodegradable grease is required, one of the other codes listed in the series should be considered instead.

Selecting the dispense period

The correct setting depends on the bearing size, speed, load, temperature and the amount of grease the bearing needs over time. SKF DialSet, mentioned above, helps calculate an appropriate rate, and the result can be compared with the available settings. Ambient temperature has an important influence on a gas driven unit, so the SKF note on high constant ambient temperatures should be respected. Choosing a setting and recording the activation date on the unit makes it easier to plan replacement before the lubricator is empty.

Installation and inspection practice

Before fitting, make sure the lubrication point and the grease path to the bearing are clean and free of hardened old grease, and that the point accepts grease without excessive resistance. Mount the lubricator directly where possible, or within the stated feed line limit, so that the gas pressure can move the grease reliably. During routine inspection rounds, the transparent container allows staff to check that the lubricant level is falling as expected; a level that does not change can indicate a blocked point.

Use in hazardous and hot areas in Oman and the GCC

Oil and gas, petrochemical and mining facilities in the region often have pumps, fans and motors in classified hazardous areas. The intrinsically safe marking and EC type examination certificate listed above allow the lubricator to be evaluated for these zones without the need for an electrical supply. Site engineers should still confirm that the marking matches the area classification.

High summer temperatures are common, particularly on outdoor equipment exposed to sun, so the ambient temperature range and the SKF advice on hot conditions should be taken into account when choosing the dispense period. Store spare lubricators in a cool place, close to the recommended storage temperature, and use them within their storage life.
