Basler Electric DECS-450 Digital Excitation Control System

Description

Excitation control for large machines with an external bridge

The Basler Electric DECS-450 is a microprocessor-based, high-performance excitation controller for positive and positive/negative forcing systems. It supplies a control voltage to an external bridge, which feeds dc energy to the main or exciter field of the synchronous machine, so it is compatible with any machine size. Basler offers it in many configurations, including dual-controller redundancy, and also designs custom solutions around it.

It is also the drop-in successor in Basler lines: the DECS-450 is backward compatible with DECS-400 controllers, using the same footprint, an optional transition plate to match DECS-400 terminals, automatic PID and gain conversion, and a predefined logic scheme that mimics DECS-400 behaviour.

DECS-450 capabilities

  • Five control modes with autotracking: AVR, FCR, FVR, var and PF
  • Regulation accuracy: AVR 0.10 percent, FCR 1.0 percent, FVR 1.0 percent, var 2.0 percent, PF 0.02 pu
  • Paralleling: network load sharing over Ethernet, reactive droop, line drop and cross-current compensation
  • Protection: 24, 25, 27, 59, 81O/U, 32R, 40Q, field overvoltage, field overcurrent, field overtemperature, exciter diode monitoring

The datasheet does not print dimensions, weight or temperature ratings for the DECS-450; these are in the instruction manual and should be confirmed before ordering.

Matching a DECS-450 to the system

Pick the control power style (24/48 Vdc or 125 Vdc/120 Vac), then decide the redundancy level. Basler offers single and dual-controller configurations, and a complete bridge and cabinet solution can be arranged by the maker, as shown by the cabinet photograph on the product page. If you are replacing a DECS-400, the footprint matches, but ask for the transition plate and review the converted settings. Provide the existing style number and we will compare it with the style chart.

Installation notes

Because the DECS-450 only drives an external bridge, wiring and sizing of the bridge, field breaker and exciter are outside the controller datasheet. Commissioning uses BESTCOMSPlus with BESTlogicPlus logic and the auto-tuning function, which Basler describes as taking the guesswork out of PID and gain settings. Use the recorded trending and sequence-of-events data when checking field forcing behaviour.

Typical DECS-450 uses

Suited to large utility, industrial and marine-class generators where the field is fed from a thyristor bridge, and to stations that need negative forcing for fast field collapse. In GCC power and water plants the usual reasons to choose it are the grid-code oriented PSS option, redundancy for continuity, and DECS-400 replacement on ageing machines.

Selection and care notes

The external bridge, the power source and the field flashing must be matched to the machine, so collect the data before ordering and plan the commissioning with the supplier of the bridge. If replacing a DECS-400, use the transition plate described in the data sheet and re-check all settings, because the controller is new. Keep a record of the settings.
