Brand:

Allen-Bradley 1734-OB8E POINT I/O 8-Point Protected 24V DC Output Module

Description

A protected version of the 8-point POINT I/O output

The Allen-Bradley 1734-OB8E is the protected output module of the POINT I/O family. It gives eight 24V DC sourcing outputs of 1.0 A each and adds electronic protection with a red fault indicator per output, so an overloaded or shorted channel is shown at the module instead of simply tripping a fuse elsewhere.

For general switching of relays and lamps without per-output protection, the sheet lists the standard 1734-OB8. The E module is the better choice where field wiring is long, loads are exposed and quick diagnosis matters.

What the fault indication tells you

Each channel has a yellow status LED showing the output state and a red LED for a fault. A steady red indicator means a short circuit is detected on that output. The two green/red module and network LEDs show device health, and the installation sheet lists a recoverable fault and an unrecoverable fault condition.

The electrical ratings match the standard module: 10 to 28.8V DC on-state range, 0.2V DC maximum drop, 0.5 mA off-state leakage and a 0.1 ms maximum delay. The surge current is 2 A for 10 ms, repeatable every 3 seconds, and the combined current of all outputs must not exceed 3.0 A.

Keying and installation

The protected modules use keyswitch position 1, so they will not seat on a base keyed for a different module type. They fit the 1734-TB, 1734-TBS, 1734-TOP and 1734-TOPS wiring bases. The module draws 32 mA of 24V DC field power and 75 mA from POINTBus.

The sheet lists Zone 2 ATEX and IECEx marks (Ex ec IIC T4 Gc) among the certifications as printed, together with the temperature codes. Check the label of the module supplied and mount it in an enclosure with at least the protection rating the sheet specifies for hazardous locations.

Documents and quotation

The sheet 1734-IN056 describes the protected output modules. Provide the 1734-OB8E reference, series, quantity, the adapter or controller and the load types when you ask for a quotation. Related hardware is listed in PLC & I/O Cards.

How the 1734-OB8E Works

Like other POINT I/O output modules, the 1734-OB8E plugs into a terminal base on the DIN rail. Logic power and data reach it through POINTBus from the adapter, while the 24V DC that drives the loads comes from the field power bus that runs through the terminal bases. When an output is switched on, the module sources current from the field supply to the load, and the load returns to the common.

The E suffix denotes electronic protection. Each output monitors its own condition, and when a short circuit is detected the red fault indicator for that channel lights and the fault is reported to the controller. This lets maintenance staff find the faulty circuit at the panel, and lets the program react to the fault, instead of relying only on an upstream fuse or breaker that would disconnect every output on the same supply.

1734-OB8E Selection & Ordering Guide

  • Protected or standard: choose the 1734-OB8E where per-output fault indication is useful; the 1734-OB8 is the standard eight-point version.
  • Current budget: each output is rated 1.0 A, but the module total is 3.0 A, so check the total of loads that can be on at the same time.
  • Terminal base: order a 1734-TB or 1734-TBS two-piece base, or a 1734-TOP or 1734-TOPS one-piece base, if the module is not going onto an existing base.
  • Adapter and power: confirm the POINT I/O adapter in use and whether a field power distributor or expansion power supply is needed for the size of the rail.
  • Coated version: the 1734-OB8EK is the conformal-coated variant.

Include the series letter and the adapter type when you request a quote for the 1734-OB8E. Our team can help confirm the correct ordering code.

Installation & Maintenance

Set the keyswitch on the terminal base to match the module before inserting it, and follow the installation instructions on whether the module may be inserted or removed under power in your area classification; in hazardous locations, remove power first. Wire each load between its output terminal and the common, fit suppression across inductive loads, and keep the DIN rail properly grounded.

When a red fault indicator appears, isolate and inspect the field wiring and load for a short circuit before resetting. Routine checks include verifying the field supply voltage, inspecting terminal screws and checking that the module and network status indicators are green.

Typical Applications in Oman & the GCC

  • Distributed I/O on oil and gas wellhead and process skids, where field wiring is long and faults must be located quickly.
  • Water treatment and desalination plants driving solenoid valves and interface relays.
  • Material handling, packaging and bottling lines using EtherNet/IP POINT I/O close to the machine.
  • Building management and district cooling panels with compact remote I/O.

About brand

Catalog numbers beginning 1756, 1734, 1746 or 5069 are read at a glance by anyone who maintains Allen-Bradley control panels. The brand, the control hardware name of Rockwell Automation, dates back to 1903 in Milwaukee, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Allen-Bradley PLC and I/O modules, communication adapters and PowerFlex drives for plants in Oman, matching catalog number, series letter and firmware against the manufacturer's documentation.

Allen-Bradley product families listed here

Current controller platforms on this page are ControlLogix, with the 1756-L85E ControlLogix 5580 controller and the 1756-PA72 chassis power supply, and CompactLogix 5380, with the 5069-L320ER and 5069-L340ERM. Distributed I/O is represented by POINT I/O: the 1734-AENTR dual-port EtherNet/IP adapter and the 1734-IB8 digital input module. Allen-Bradley drives listed include the PowerFlex 525 and PowerFlex 755. For installed systems there are SLC 500 parts: the 1746-A10 chassis, 1746-NI16I analog input module, 1747-ASB remote I/O adapter, 1747-KE interface and 1747-M13 memory module.

Where Allen-Bradley hardware is used

ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers run packaged equipment and plant utilities: compressor and pump skids, water and wastewater plants, power distribution, material handling and packaging lines. PowerFlex drives control pumps, fans and conveyors. Many SLC 500 racks are still in service.

Ordering Allen-Bradley modules and drives: what we need

Send the full catalog number, the series letter and, for controllers and communication modules, the firmware revision printed on the side label. Compatibility with an existing project depends on these. For PowerFlex drives, give the complete catalog string, which encodes voltage, current rating, enclosure and options, plus the motor nameplate data. For SLC 500 parts, tell us the rack size and processor so that we can check slot and power supply loading in the manufacturer's manuals. A label photo avoids most mistakes.
