ABB ACS355-03E-31A0-4 ACS355 15 kW Machinery Drive
Description
ABB ACS355-03E-31A0-4: 15 kW ACS355 drive, frame R4
The ABB ACS355-03E-31A0-4 is a 15 kW machinery drive from the ACS355 family, built in frame R4 and rated 31 A at 380 to 480 V. It is the 3-phase variant with the internal EMC filter connected (the E in 03E), supplied as IP20 for cabinet mounting.
ACS355 drives are aimed at OEM machine builders: they combine scalar and vector control, an embedded Modbus RTU link, an STO input and compact dimensions, so a 15 kW unit needs only 260 mm of panel width.

Reading the ratings and derating
ABB gives the input current as 52 A without a choke and 25 A with a 5% choke or ABB CHK-xx unit; size cables and fuses from the figure that matches the installation. The overload allowance is 150% for one minute every ten minutes, which equals 46.5 A.
Switching frequency affects capacity: at 8 kHz the output current is derated to 80%, at 12 kHz to 65%, and at 16 kHz to 50% with the ambient limited to 30 C.
Frame R4 measures 260 mm wide, 181 mm high without the clamping plate (244 mm with it) and 169 mm deep, and weighs 5.2 kg in IP20 form. Free space of 75 mm is required above and below; none is needed at the sides. Cooling uses an internal fan moving 96 m3/h from bottom to top, with 350 W main-circuit heat dissipation at nominal load.
Fuses are 80 A gG or 80 A UL class T/CC. Supply and motor conductors are 16 mm2 copper.
Reading the ACS355-03E-31A0-4 order code
In ACS355-03E-31A0-4, ACS355 is the series, 03 the 3-phase input, E the connected EMC filter (U for US parametrization with the filter disconnected), 31A0 the output current and 4 the 380 to 480 V range. Options in ABB’s list include the ACS-CP-C basic and ACS-CP-A assistant panels, FPBA-01 PROFIBUS DP, FDNA-01 DeviceNet, FCAN-01 CANopen and FPNO-21 PROFINET IO modules.
Sizing the ACS355-03E-31A0-4 for a machine
Begin with the motor nameplate current and the load profile. The drive provides 31 A continuous, 46.5 A for one minute in ten, and up to 54.3 A for 2 s at start, which suits machines such as conveyors, mixers, pumps, fans and packaging equipment with occasional peaks. If the machine needs a higher switching frequency for low motor noise, take the derating given above into account: a 15 kW motor at 12 or 16 kHz may need a larger drive. Check the motor cable length as well, since longer runs than the standard limit call for output chokes, and the EMC category depends on the cable length and switching frequency.
Decide early between scalar and vector control. Scalar control is common for fans and pumps, while vector control is used where the machine needs better speed holding or torque at low speed. The choice affects commissioning but not the hardware order.
Installation and commissioning steps
- Mount the IP20 drive vertically in a cabinet, keeping the 75 mm free space above and below for the bottom-to-top air flow.
- Install 80 A gG or UL class T/CC fuses and size supply and motor cables from the input current that matches your choke arrangement.
- Keep motor cables away from control and Modbus wiring, and earth cable screens as described in the user manual.
- Wire the STO input as required by the machine safety design and test it before first run.
- Enter the motor nameplate data, select the control mode, check rotation direction with the motor uncoupled where possible, then set ramps, limits and the control source.
Cabinet cooling in GCC conditions
At nominal load the main circuit dissipates around 350 W, and the drive needs 96 m3/h of air. In Oman and the wider Gulf, panels in workshops and outdoor shelters often start from a high ambient temperature, so the cabinet cooling must remove this heat without letting the internal temperature climb. Plan air inlet and outlet positions, keep dust out of the air path, and check the cabinet temperature during the first hot season. Where a high switching frequency is used, remember the reduced ambient limit stated above. Inspect terminals and clean dust from the drive during planned shutdowns.
What to include in your RFQ
State the full type code ACS355-03E-31A0-4 and the quantity, the motor nameplate data, the supply voltage and whether a choke is used. Indicate the filter variant (E or U), any panel or fieldbus option from the list above, and the motor cable length. If the drive replaces an existing ACS355, include the type code from its label.
Documents and quotation
Data follows the ABB ACS355 user’s manual and the catalogue attached to this page. Related published models include the ACS355-03E-08A8-4 and ACS355-03E-23A1-4, and more drives are listed under AC Drives.
Please confirm before ordering: motor nameplate, supply voltage, filter variant (E or U), panel and fieldbus needs. ACS355 is a legacy series, so Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, confirms availability and lead time at quotation.

About brand
ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.
ABB product families on this page
Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Where ABB instruments and drives are used
Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.
Ordering ABB parts: what we need
For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
