ABB ACS880-01-124A-5 ACS880-01 55 kW Frame R6 AC Drive
Description
ACS880-01-124A-5 ACS880-01 drive: ratings, frame R6 and options
Choose the ABB ACS880-01-124A-5 when a wall-mounted heavy-industrial drive is needed for a motor of about 55 kW on a 380 to 500 V network. In the type code, ACS880 is the series, -01 the wall-mounted single drive, 124A the size (124 A nominal) and -5 the voltage range.
Standard equipment named in ABB’s type key is the IP21 wall-mounted housing, the assistant panel, a DC choke, the ACS880 primary control program, Safe torque off and a cable entry box.

Choosing the duty rating for the 124A size
Heat is the planning figure for this size: 1673 W typical power loss, removed by 435 m3/h of cooling air at 68 dB(A). The IP21 housing is 252 mm wide and 42.2 kg.
Short-circuit protection in the manual uses a 160 A OFAF00H160 gG fuse, or a 315 A Bussmann 170M3817 aR fuse where ultrarapid protection is preferred; UL installations list JJS-200. The copper power cable size given is 3×95 mm2. Brake chopper operation needs the +D150 plus code on this frame.
The motor cable limit is 300 m for this frame. Output frequency is 0 to 598 Hz, or 0 to 120 Hz with a du/dt or sine filter.
A 55 kW label does not decide sizing alone. ABB separates nominal (124 A), light-duty (118 A) and heavy-duty (96 A) operation, so compare the load cycle and required overload with those columns before settling on this size.
Check the supply before ordering: 55 kW applies at 400 V, 75 kW at 500 V, and the 480 V UL figures are 100 hp and 75 hp for light and heavy duty.
Reading the ACS880-01-124A-5 order code
Reading the code: ACS880-01-124A-5 identifies the 124 A drive for 380 to 500 V. Fieldbus and I/O options use plus codes such as +K454 (FPBA-01), +K475 (FENA-21), +K490 (FEIP-21), +K492 (FPNO-21), +L502 (FEN-31) and +L500 (FIO-11).
Installing the R6 wall-mounted drive
Plan the mounting position around the airflow the drive needs rather than around the nearest free wall. The ACS880-01 is a wall-mounted unit in an IP21 housing, so it belongs in an electrical room, a ventilated cubicle or a protected corner of a plant room, not in an open area exposed to wash-down, rain or blown sand. Leave the clearances above and below the unit that ABB specifies in the hardware manual so that warm exhaust air is not drawn straight back into the inlet. Where several drives share one room, arrange them so that one unit does not breathe the exhaust of another.
Route the motor cable separately from control and fieldbus wiring, use the cable type and screen termination described in the manual, and keep the motor cable run within the 300 m limit listed for this frame. Fit the short-circuit protection selected from the fuse table before the drive is energised for the first time.
Commissioning the ACS880-01-124A-5 on site
Before switching on, check that the supply really is within the 380 to 500 V range, that all terminals are tightened as instructed and that the motor is free to turn or is safely coupled to its load. Enter the motor nameplate data through the assistant panel, then run the identification routine that the primary control program offers so that the drive model matches the actual motor.
Test Safe torque off as a function in its own right, following the validation steps in the ABB documentation, and record the result for the plant safety file. If a fieldbus adapter is fitted through a plus code, confirm communication with the PLC and check what the drive does when the bus is lost. Finally run the machine through its normal cycle and note current, temperature and any warnings while the process is under real load.
Heat, dust and humidity in Oman and the GCC
Summer air temperatures in many Gulf locations sit close to or above the point where ABB derating starts, and electrical rooms without proper cooling can be hotter still. Size the room ventilation or air conditioning for the full heat the drive releases, and remember that the cooling air the drive moves also carries fine dust into the unit. Filtered intake air and a slightly positive room pressure help keep dust out of the heatsink.
In coastal sites such as Muscat, Sohar or Duqm, humid and salty air can condense inside cabinets when an air-conditioned room cools down overnight or during a shutdown. Keep the room conditions stable, avoid drafts from doors left open to the outside, and check for moisture before re-energising after a long stop.
Routine maintenance for long service life
Set a maintenance interval based on how dusty the room is rather than on the calendar alone. Inspect and clean the air path, check that the cooling airflow is unobstructed and look for discoloured terminals or loosened cable glands. Read the event log during each visit, since repeated temperature or overcurrent warnings are often the first sign of a blocked air path or a changing load.
ABB publishes maintenance schedules for ACS880 drives that cover consumable parts; follow that schedule and keep a written record so replacement can be planned during a planned shutdown. Store a parameter backup from the assistant panel so a replacement unit can be configured quickly if it is ever needed.

About brand
ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.
ABB product families on this page
Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.
Where ABB instruments and drives are used
Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.
Ordering ABB parts: what we need
For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
