A heavy-duty 223 series spherical roller bearing for shock-loaded machines

The SKF 22315 E is a double row spherical roller bearing from the heavy 223 series, with a 75 mm bore, 160 mm outside diameter and a wide 55 mm width. The width and the large rollers give a dynamic rating of 462 kN, almost three times that of the 22212 E of the same family, and a static rating of 475 kN. It is chosen for heavy radial load and shock load in vibrating screens, crushers, gearboxes, large pumps and fans.

Like every SKF spherical roller bearing, it is self-aligning, so a deflected shaft or a housing that is slightly out of line does not cause edge stress or a significant increase in friction or temperature. SKF lists it in the Explorer class with an annular groove and lubrication holes in the outer ring for relubrication.

Variants and sleeve-mounted versions

In the designation, 223 is the heavy dimension series and 15 gives the 75 mm bore. The suffix E marks the optimised internal design. For bores above 65 mm the SKF brochure shows the E design with the floating guide ring centred on the cages instead of the inner ring, which suits the larger rollers. The tapered bore version, 22315 EK, is listed with adapter sleeve H 2315 or withdrawal sleeve AHX 2315 G. For vibratory applications SKF also builds a special version with the suffix EJA/VA405, listed in the same brochure; it is a different designation with its own tables.

The permissible angular misalignment for series 223 is 3 degrees according to the brochure, larger than for the lighter series, which is helpful in long shafts. The relubrication groove has a width of 8.3 mm and the lubrication holes a diameter of 4.5 mm.

Selection, mounting and what to confirm

For heavy duty, check the ratio of load to dynamic rating and the speed against the limiting speed of 4 300 r/min. When the loads are purely radial and the speed is moderate, grease lubrication is usual; at higher speeds and temperatures consult the SKF relubrication guidance. Shaft shoulder diameter should be at least 87 mm and the housing shoulder no more than 148 mm with fillet radii of 2 mm or less.
