Pedrollo 6SR 6-Inch Submersible Borehole Pump

6-inch sand-resistant submersible pumps for wells and pressure boosting up to 60 m3/h

The Pedrollo 6SR series is made up of 6 inch multistage submersible pumps for clean water with a sand content of up to 100 g/m3. Pedrollo lists them for industrial, civil and agricultural applications: water distribution coupled with pressure tanks, irrigation, pressure boosting and fire-fighting systems. Flow reaches 1,000 l/min (60 m3/h) and head reaches 390 m on the 50 Hz datasheet, which makes the 6SR the larger-bore step above the 4 inch 4SR range for deeper wells and higher flows.

The pump is supplied with a three-phase 400 V, 50 Hz motor and a 4 m power cable. Pedrollo offers it with a 6PD rewindable oil-filled motor or a 6PSR rewindable water-filled motor, and special materials for resisting sand abrasion: impellers of Noryl coated with a sand-resistant elastomer and bearings of AISI 316L stainless steel coated with chromium oxide.

Frames and power range

The model code reads frame, number of stages and motor type: 6SR 18/13-PD is the 6SR 18 frame with 13 stages and a 6PD oil-filled motor, rated 11 kW (15 HP), with 176 m at zero flow and 70 m at 450 l/min. The dimensions table in the datasheet gives length and weight per model, for example 55.0 kg for the 6SR 12/8-PD and 109.1 kg for the 6SR 18/26-PD.

Selection and installation notes

Select the frame by required flow and the stage count by total dynamic head, including the drawdown of the well and friction losses in the riser. The pump must stay submerged and the well must supply at least 8 cm/s of cooling flow past the motor; in tanks, rivers or large-diameter casings Pedrollo lists a cooling jacket kit complete with filter and inlets. The datasheet shows the typical installation: the pump hangs on the delivery pipe, with a stainless steel safety cable fixed to the coupling, a check valve, level control probes and a control panel.

Typical duties for the 6SR series

The 6SR is a borehole pump for projects where a smaller well pump would run out of flow or head. Typical duties in the region include supplying farms and plantations from deep wells, feeding water distribution networks together with pressure tanks, raising water from boreholes to elevated storage, pressure boosting for buildings and compounds, and supply to fire-fighting systems where the design allows a submersible source. Because the series is built for clean water with a limited sand content, it suits wells that have been properly developed and screened, where some fine sand remains but the water is not heavily loaded with solids.

Choosing between motor types and frames

The choice between the oil-filled and water-filled rewindable motors is mainly a question of installation depth and operator preference, since the datasheet gives a different maximum depth below water level for each. Plants that prefer to avoid any oil in the well often choose the water-filled design, while deeper settings may point to the oil-filled one. Frame size should follow the required flow at the duty point, and the number of stages should follow the total head, so the duty point needs to sit in the useful part of the performance curve rather than near zero flow. Check also that the well casing is wide enough for the pump and cable, and that the expected water level after drawdown leaves the pump fully submerged at all times.

Integration with the control panel

On a typical installation, the pump works together with level control probes in the well, a control panel at the surface and, for distribution duties, pressure tanks that limit the number of starts. The panel should protect the motor against dry running, overload and phase problems, and the start logic should respect the allowed starts per hour shown in the specification table. Where a pump feeds a network with changing demand, the pressure tank size and switch settings have a direct effect on how often the motor starts, so they deserve attention at the design stage.

Borehole conditions in Oman and the GCC

Many wells in Oman and the Gulf combine deep water levels, fine sand and water with high mineral content, and ambient temperatures at the wellhead can be very high in summer. The sand-resistant impellers and coated bearings help where some sand is present, but a well should still be developed and tested before a new pump is installed, and the liquid temperature limit on the datasheet must be respected. Keep the surface control panel shaded and ventilated, protect the power cable where it enters the well, and record water levels, running current and output over time so that changes in well yield or pump wear are noticed early.
