Overload classes for the largest frame

Note on codes: the current ACS580-01 hardware manual in our library (Revision E) lists the smallest 400 V sizes as 02A6-4 and 03A3-4 in frame R0, while ABB’s product records still carry ACS580-01-02A7-4 as an R1 type with the ratings above. This page uses the ABB hardware manual edition that lists ACS580-01-02A7-4 together with ABB’s product record, so confirm the type code on the drive label before ordering.

Both duty classes are stated: light duty 2.5 A / 0.75 kW with 110% overload for one minute in ten, and heavy duty 1.8 A / 0.55 kW with 150% overload.

The R9 body, 125 x 355 x 223 mm and 4.8 kg, is the largest wall-mounted ACS580-01. It dissipates about 45 W, needs 34 m3/h of cooling air and measures 55 dB(A). Input fuses are 4 A OFAF000H4 (gG) or 25 A 170M1561 (aR), with JJS-15 for UL. The copper cable specification is 3×1.5+1.5 mm2. IP55 units of type 430A-4 have a lower nominal ambient of +35 C.

For frame R9, leave 200 mm above and 300 mm below the drive, and 150 mm at the sides. Two cables of up to 240 mm2 can be connected per phase.

Reading the ACS580-01-02A7-4 order code

Code reading for ACS580-01-02A7-4: 430A is the size at 400 V, -4 the voltage code. Typical options on this big frame include +B056 for IP55, +C135 for flange mounting and fieldbus kits such as FENA-21 (+K475). Because retrofit of IP55 is impossible, specify it in the first order.

Matching this frame R1 drive to the motor and load

Start from the motor nameplate rather than the kilowatt figure alone. The ACS580-01-02A7-4 gives a nominal output of 2.6 A and 0.75 kW, 2.5 A in light-duty use and 1.8 A / 0.55 kW in heavy-duty use, on a 3-phase 380 to 480 V supply. Fans and centrifugal pumps that rarely need high starting torque usually fit the light-duty rating, while conveyors, mixers and positive-displacement pumps that start under load are better compared with the heavy-duty figure. If the motor current sits close to a limit, compare it with the next size in the ACS580 family before ordering.

Installation and commissioning

  • Mount the drive vertically on a solid wall or panel back plate and keep the cooling air path clear; the unit needs around 34 m3/h of air and dissipates about 45 W.
  • Use input fuses of the type listed in the table, and size power cabling to the hardware manual and local regulations.
  • Keep motor and control cables separated, and terminate cable screens as the manual describes so that the built-in C2 filter works as intended.
  • Wire the Safe torque off inputs according to the safety design of the machine, and test the function before handing over.
  • Use the assistant control panel to enter motor nameplate data, check the direction of rotation and set ramps, limits and the control source.

Running variable-speed drives in GCC heat and dust

Electrical rooms and outdoor shelters in Oman see high ambient temperatures, fine dust and, near the coast, humidity with salt. The drive is rated for -15 to +50 C, and the coated boards help against humid and contaminated air, but heat inside an enclosure can rise well above the room temperature. Check the temperature inside any cabinet that houses the IP21 unit, keep air paths clean, and plan periodic inspection of terminals and cooling surfaces for dust build-up. Where the drive is installed at altitude, apply the derating stated above 1000 m.

Treat any enclosure that houses this drive as part of the cooling design: the 45 W of losses must leave the cabinet, so plan the air inlet and outlet before the panel is built rather than after the first summer trip. Record the ambient and cabinet temperatures during commissioning so that later service visits have a baseline to compare against.

Information to send with your RFQ

List the full type code ACS580-01-02A7-4, the quantity, the supply voltage, and the motor power and current from the nameplate. State the duty (light or heavy), the application, and any option codes you need, such as IP55 or a fieldbus kit, since enclosure class should be fixed in the first order. If you are replacing an existing drive, include the type code from its label so the frame size and ratings can be confirmed against the current ABB documentation.

Documents and quotation

This page follows the ABB ACS580-01 hardware manual (edition listing this rating) and the ABB product record. The ACS580 family page and AC Drives help compare sizes.

Large frames are made to order in many cases, so ask for lead time early. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, states availability in the quotation; confirm voltage, duty and IP class first.

About brand

ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.

ABB product families on this page

Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.

Where ABB instruments and drives are used

Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.

Ordering ABB parts: what we need

For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
