Brand: Hughes Safety Showers
Hughes MPC-H-2GS/11KS Polar Safety Shower Insulated Cubicle
Description
The Hughes MPC-H-2GS/11KS is a polar safety shower inside a double skinned, insulated cubicle with an eye/face wash, intended for outdoor sites in exposed freezing conditions.
A shower cubicle that shelters the casualty from the weather
Cold conditions affect the casualty as well as the pipework. This cubicle has insulated push-open doors that close automatically behind the person, windows so that others can monitor them, a drain sump and an eye/face wash. The datasheet states that the shower, eye wash and pipework are trace tape heated and pre-insulated with 40 mm foil backed polyurethane, with an ambient range of -35 to 55 C.
An optional heated water tank can be connected to guarantee a constant supply of tepid water. The shower is started by a push activated panic bar, the eye wash by lifting its lid, and the electrical equipment is listed for ATEX Zone 1 and 2, gas groups IIA and IIB, T3, with IIC available. The unit meets EN and ANSI standards per the manufacturer.

Polar duty, power and heated water
The cubicle is a heavy unit at 410 kg, so lifting points, a level pad and the drain sump discharge are part of the engineering. The trace tape load is only 18 W, but the supply still needs isolation, and a hazardous-area design has to route cable to the Zone 1 and 2 rating.
Trace tape stops the pipe freezing; it does not make the supply tepid. The standards summaries ask for water at about 15 to 38 C for 15 minutes, so on a very cold site the optional heated water tank is the way to meet that figure, which is why the datasheet mentions it. The doors close automatically, so check that they do not trap a casualty or restrict a rescuer, and confirm how the cubicle will be alarmed.
| Hughes model | Configuration | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| EXP-SD-18GS/45G | Self-draining shower and eye wash | Outdoor hot climates |
| EXP-AH-5GS/45G | Trace tape heated shower and eye wash | Outdoor freezing climates |
| EXP-EJ-5GS/45G | Jacketed and insulated shower and eye wash | Solar exposure, warm climates |
| STD-TC-100KS/45G | Temperature controlled shower and eye wash, 300 L heated tank | No hot water supply |
Options and what to confirm before ordering
Listed options are a foot panel or treadle, shower and eye wash sign, lighting, audible and visual alarm, a shower rose, GRP safety barriers and a deluge tester kit. Confirm the design minimum temperature, the hazardous area class, the water source and whether the heated tank is required, along with lifting and transport arrangements for the 1414 x 1464 x 2820 mm cubicle.
How the Hughes MPC-H-2GS/11KS works
A person steps into the cubicle and pushes the panic bar. The shower starts at once. The pipework is trace tape heated and insulated, so the water stays ready in freezing weather. Lifting the lid starts the eye wash.
