Apollo 55000-280 XP95 IR2 Flame Detector

Description

A dual-IR flame detector for open flaming fires

The Apollo 55000-280 is the XP95 IR2 flame detector, designed to protect areas where open flaming fires may be expected. It has two infrared sensors that respond to different IR wavelengths to discriminate between flames and spurious radiation. False alarms from factors such as flickering sunlight are avoided by a combination of filters and signal processing.

The detector responds to low-frequency flickering infrared radiation of 1 to 15 Hz (1.0 to 2.7 micrometres), so it can detect flickering flames including those invisible to the naked eye such as hydrogen fires. Because it responds to flicker it can operate even if the lens is covered by a layer of oil, dust, water vapour or ice. It is loop powered, and a remote LED alarm indicator can be connected.

Detection behaviour and installation notes

The response table shows a 0.1 m2 yellow n-heptane flame detected at 25 m at Class 1 sensitivity, and a 0.25 m2 clear methylated-spirit flame at 25 m. Because the field of view is a 90 degree cone, placement and aiming determine coverage rather than the headline distances, which assume a flame in the cone.

Features listed by Apollo are sensitivity to flickering IR, detection through films of oil, dust, water and ice, response to flickering flames including those invisible to the naked eye, and a remote optical self-test function. The 55000-280 is a general-purpose, non-hazardous-area detector; the flameproof XP95 Exd version is a separate model.

What to confirm before ordering

Confirm the target fuel and fire size, the distance and angle to the hazard, the sensitivity setting (Class 1 or Class 3), cable gland and enclosure needs, and whether the installation is a hazardous area. This model carries no hazardous-area certification in the datasheet, so for classified zones consider the Apollo XP95 Exd flameproof flame detector instead.

Check compatibility with the XP95 or Discovery control panel and loop loading, and note that Apollo states the EMC declaration applies provided the unit is used as described in its datasheet.

About brand

Apollo devices are used to build addressable fire alarm loops. Apollo, founded in 1980 and based in Havant, United Kingdom, makes fire detectors and the loop devices that work with them. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists Apollo fire detection devices for fire alarm contractors and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC, currently the XP95 Sounder Control Unit.

Apollo XP95 loop devices

XP95 is the Apollo range of analogue addressable detectors and interfaces. Besides detectors, it includes modules that link the loop to other equipment. The Sounder Control Unit on our site is one of these: it lets the control panel switch and supervise a circuit of conventional sounders fed from an external power supply.

Ordering Apollo devices: what we need

Apollo identifies each device by a part number in the form 55000-000, for example 55000-182 for a DIN-rail sounder control unit. Send that number, the range name printed on the device, the quantity, and the make and model of your control panel. For detectors, state whether mounting bases are needed and which type.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 55000-280?
The Apollo XP95 IR2 flame detector with two infrared sensors for open flaming fires.
What range does it detect?
0.1 m2 n-heptane at 25 m, 0.2 m2 at 35 m and 0.4 m2 at 45 m at high sensitivity.
