Plastic linear Ex LED luminaires with optional emergency operation

The Cortem LifEx-P series are linear LED luminaires with a UV-resistant, IK09 polycarbonate and glass-fibre reinforced polyester body and a transparent polycarbonate diffuser. Cortem describes a compact, light, easy-to-install and highly corrosion-resistant design, built for a long service life, with an innovative bracket mechanism that has no fixed fixing distance, which makes retrofit easy. Lengths and power ratings vary, and lumen output ranges from 1,500 lm to 12,500 lm. The datasheet cover lists a five-year warranty subject to Cortem terms.

Two versions cover different zones. LifEx-PE (Ex db eb mb IIC, Ex tb IIIC) is for Zones 1, 2, 21 and 22 with protection levels Gb and Db. LifEx-PN (Ex nR IIC, Ex tb IIIC) is for Zone 2 and Zones 21 and 22 with levels Gc and Db. Emergency versions add a battery unit, with a heated-battery option for ambient temperatures down to -60 °C.

Emergency versions, options and what to confirm

Emergency models such as LifEx-PE-0615N, -0630N and -1230N weigh 3.4 to 5.2 kg and give 797, 793 and 667 lm in emergency mode with 90 or 180 minutes discharge time. Options include coloured LED strips, a battery box for easier battery replacement (example LifEx-PE-1230N-AE), a battery heater version for -60 °C at 230 Vac (example LifEx-PE-1230NH), wiring connection versions, DALI dimming on enquiry, multirange drivers, and earthing rings for metal glands.

Confirm the zone (PE or PN), length and wattage, supply voltage, emergency requirement and ambient range, and the gland type. The LifEx-M series from the same manufacturer is a separate model.

How the Cortem LifEx-P works

The luminaire holds LED boards and a driver inside a sealed plastic body. The body keeps gas and dust away from the electrical parts, and the Ex protection methods keep a fault from igniting the atmosphere. The diffuser spreads the light along the length. In emergency versions a small battery runs the lamp when the supply is lost.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the LifEx-P

Fix the luminaire with the brackets at the spacing the site needs. Use certified glands and plugs in the entries. Wire the supply to the terminals and the jumper. Close the cover and check the seal. In the emergency version, check that the green charge LED is on.

The luminaire is rated IP66.

LifEx-P supply

The supply is 110 to 277 Vac, 50 or 60 Hz.

LifEx-P terminals

The terminals take cable up to 4 mm2 with a jumper from in to out.

LifEx-P emergency unit

The emergency unit has an electronic inverter and a Ni-MH battery of 1.8 or 3 Ah.

LifEx-P temperature

Models without a battery work down to minus 60 degrees C.

It has up to four 25.5 mm entries.

Choosing the right LifEx-P version

Choose the PE version for zones 1 and 21, and the PN version for zone 2.

The PE version is category 2GD and the PN version is category 3G with 2D.

The gaskets are silicone and the internal frame is aluminium.

LifEx-P colors

The body is grey in RAL 7015 and 7045.
