Timken Corrosion-Resistant Stainless Deep Groove Ball Bearings

Description

Stainless steel deep groove ball bearings for washdown and food processing

Timken corrosion-resistant deep groove ball bearings are built with stainless steel rings, balls, cages and shields for wet, washdown and corrosive environments such as food and beverage processing. The rings and balls are made from a high-chromium martensitic stainless steel, and the cages and shields from a high-chromium austenitic stainless steel. The stainless construction resists corrosion and also improves metal detectability.

The range covers the 6000, 6200 and 6300 series and the 600 series, in open, double stainless shield (ZZ), double contact seal (2RS) and double blue FDA/EC contact seal (2RSF) designs. The H in the designation marks the stainless steel material, for example 6205H.

Seals, lubrication and designation

The nomenclature reads series, bore code, material, closure, clearance and lubricant: in 6205H-2RSF-C3/F the 62 is the light series, 05 gives a 25 mm bore, H is stainless, 2RSF is the blue FDA/EC double seal, C3 is loose clearance and F is standard food-grade grease. A blank lubricant code means standard industrial grease, and FVSL613 and VSL609 mark food-grade and industrial Solid Lube.

The blue seals comply with FDA guidelines for indirect food additives under 21 CFR 177.2600 and meet EC 1935/2004, according to the sell sheet. Open bearings are supplied with a rust preventive and should be cleaned before installation in food and beverage applications. Typical uses named by Timken include poultry deboning, filling and seaming, conveyor rolls, form fill seal machines, weighers and labeling equipment.

Typical selection questions include the washdown chemicals, the food-contact requirement, the speed, the temperature and whether open, shielded or sealed construction is needed. Because stainless rings carry a different load rating than standard steel bearings, compare the catalog ratings for the H designation, not the carbon steel ones, when checking load and life for the application.

Picking the closure and clearance for a stainless bearing position

Start from how the machine is cleaned. A conveyor roll that sees a daily high-pressure hose-down with caustic or chlorinated cleaners needs a contact seal, and where the bearing sits in or above the product zone the blue 2RSF seal is the logical choice because of its food-contact compliance. A position that is splashed only occasionally and turns faster may be better served by ZZ shields, which have no rubbing lip and therefore run cooler. Open bearings suit housings that carry their own seals and are relubricated from outside.

Clearance matters as much as material. Stainless rings that are pressed onto a warm shaft or into a tight housing lose internal clearance, so a C3 bearing is often chosen where the fit is heavy or where the shaft runs noticeably hotter than the housing. Normal C0 clearance suits light fits and cooler running. If you are replacing an existing carbon steel bearing with an H version, read the clearance and lubricant codes from the old part rather than assuming the standard.

Grease or Solid Lube

Food-grade grease is the default answer for most washdown points. The Solid Lube option is worth considering where water regularly gets past the seals and washes grease out, because the oil is held in a polymer matrix inside the bearing; check the narrower temperature window listed in the table before choosing it for ovens or hot fillers.

Fitting and running in

  • Clean open bearings to remove the rust preventive before they go into food or beverage equipment, then lubricate with the specified food-grade grease.
  • Press only on the ring that carries the fit; pushing the outer ring to seat the inner ring transmits load through the balls and marks the raceways.
  • Keep stainless shafts and housings free of burrs, and use a clean, food-safe assembly lubricant on the seat if one is approved on your site.
  • Turn the shaft by hand after fitting; it should rotate smoothly with only the light drag of the seals.

Maintenance and signs of trouble

Rising noise, a rough feel when the shaft is turned by hand, or rust-coloured streaks around the seal lip are the usual early warnings. On washdown lines, many failures come from water and cleaning agents entering through a worn seal rather than from fatigue, so inspect seal lips during planned stops and replace the bearing rather than re-greasing a sealed unit. Avoid pointing a pressure lance straight at a seal face during cleaning; spraying across the housing removes soil without forcing water past the lip.

Stainless bearings in Omani and GCC plants

Dairy, bottled water, juice, poultry and fish processing plants across Oman combine wet cleaning with high ambient temperature, and in coastal towns the air also carries salt. Carbon steel bearings in these conditions often rust during idle periods between production runs, which is exactly the problem stainless rings, balls, cages and shields address. For fish and seafood plants near the coast, the improved metal detectability of an all-stainless bearing is also useful, since a fragment from a damaged bearing is more likely to be caught by the line’s metal detector. Store spares sealed in their packaging and away from the washdown area until they are fitted.

Documents and quotation

The attached catalog contains the full 6000, 6200, 6300 and 600 series tables, shield and seal data and lubrication guidance. The standard carbon steel range is on the Timken 6200 series deep groove page, and other bearings are grouped under Electric Motors, Pumps and Turbines. Where Timken bearings are used

Gearboxes, pumps, fans and blowers, conveyors and crushers, rolling mills, food processing lines and vehicle wheel ends.

Ordering Timken bearings: what we need

Give the complete part number stamped on the bearing, including any prefix and suffix. Inch-series tapered roller bearings have separate numbers for cone and cup, so quote both. If the marking is worn, measure bore, outside diameter and width and tell us the machine and shaft position. For housed units give the housing type, shaft size and locking method. State the quantity and any precision class or special clearance required.
