Selectarc UP S2Mo EA2 0.5% Mo Submerged Arc Wire
Description
Molybdenum-alloyed SAW wire for pipe, vessels and tanks
The Selectarc UP S2Mo is a copper-coated solid wire for submerged arc welding of high-strength steels, alloyed with about 0.5% molybdenum. It is classified AWS A5.23 EA2, ISO 24598-A S S Mo and ISO 14171-A S2Mo. The molybdenum addition raises strength and creep resistance compared with a plain C-Mn wire, and Selectarc gives service temperatures up to 500 °C.
Main applications listed on the data sheet are steel construction, pressure vessels and tanks. The wire also covers fine-grain steels, pipe steels and heat-resistant steels, which makes it a common choice for longitudinal and spiral seams in line pipe and for thick plate fabrication where a plain S2 wire would not reach the required strength.

Base materials
Selectarc lists EN / ISO grades P420N and S420NL, P460N and S460NL, line pipe L415N to L485Q, S275J2G3, S355J2G3 and the heat-resistant 16Mo3. On the ASTM and API side it names A633 Gr E, A204 Gr A, A209 T1, A572 Gr 42 and 50, and API 5L X60 to X70.
For pipeline steels in the X60 to X70 range, a Mo-alloyed wire paired with a suitable agglomerated flux helps the weld metal match the strength of the thermo-mechanically rolled plate while keeping toughness acceptable. For 16Mo3 and A204 boiler and vessel plates, the molybdenum content gives matching elevated-temperature strength.
Flux selection and procedure
Mechanical properties in SAW come from the wire and flux combination, so the toughness and strength of a UP S2Mo weld depend on which of the listed fluxes is used: UP LA01, UP LA04, UP LA05 or UP BF10. High-basicity fluxes are generally preferred where low-temperature Charpy values are required, while less basic fluxes offer better bead shape at high speed.
The data sheet gives parameters from 360 A on the 2.4 mm wire up to 600 A on the 4.0 mm wire, with an interpass temperature below 200 °C. Preheat and any post-weld heat treatment follow the base metal and code. Keep flux dry and recycled flux clean, and protect copper-coated wire from humidity to prevent rust and feeding problems.

About brand
Selectarc is a French manufacturer of welding and brazing filler metals, headquartered in Grandvillars, France. Its welding activity began in 1952 with Selectarc Industrie, a plant making covered electrodes, and the business is the welding and brazing division of the family group Viellard Migeon & Compagnie. In 2025 Framatome took a 40% stake in the company.
Selectarc welding and brazing products
The welding range covers covered electrodes for carbon, low-alloy, stainless and nickel-base steels, MIG and TIG wires, flux-cored wires and hardfacing products, with brazing alloys made at the former Reboud-Roche foundry. Selectarc lists the nuclear, defence and aerospace industries among its key markets, and welding production is concentrated at its Grandvillars site, which also houses the research laboratory.
Ordering Selectarc filler metals: what we need
Give the product name, for example Selectarc Ni625, and the AWS or ISO classification in your procedure, the diameter and length, and the quantity. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, checks the grade against the Selectarc technical data sheet and can provide the data sheet and the certificates issued with the order on request.
