Brand: Elga
Elga Cromarod 316LP E316L-17 Stainless Pipe Electrode
Description
All-position 316L electrode for thin-walled pipework
The Elga Cromarod 316LP is a rutile-coated stick electrode for molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steels. Elga designed it specifically for thin-walled pipelines, down to 1.5 mm wall, in the chemical process and papermaking industries, where it offers considerably higher productivity than manual TIG.
The manufacturer highlights very good arc stability, weld pool control and restriking, which suit vertical and overhead welds in fixed pipework and cramped site conditions. Elga also recommends it for root runs and butt welds in general fabrication of 316-type steels in all thicknesses.

Thin-wall technique and corrosion performance
The low current window of the 2.0 mm size, starting at 20 A, is what makes the electrode usable on thin pipe walls without burning through. Elga lists about 145 electrodes per kilogram of weld metal in 2.0 mm, 91 in 2.5 mm and 44 in 3.2 mm, with deposition rates of 0.7 to 1.4 kg per arc hour, which is useful when estimating consumption for a spool or a tie-in.
Elga states good resistance to general and intergranular corrosion in severe environments such as dilute hot acids, and good resistance to chloride pitting. The core wire is limited to P 0.020%, S 0.015% and N 0.080% max. The ferrite level of about FN 4 is lower than in many general-purpose 316L electrodes, which keeps the deposit tough at low temperature.
For duplex rather than 316-type pipe, Elga offers the Cromarod Duplex electrode. The photo shows Elga Cromarod range packaging.
Keep the arc short and use stringer beads or a narrow weave to limit heat input on thin walls, which also reduces distortion and heat tint. Electrodes that have absorbed moisture can be redried at 350 °C for two hours, as stated by Elga. Remove slag and heat tint after welding where the pipe carries corrosive media. For heavier sections, the same grade can be used for the root and hot pass before filling with a higher-deposition process if the procedure allows it.
The typical values in the table are example results under EN ISO test conditions and are not guaranteed; the specified minimums are the figures to use for qualification.

About brand
Elga is a Swedish brand of welding consumables, started in 1938 in Gothenburg when engineer Carl Alfredson founded AB El & Gassvetsning. Elga produced its first coated electrodes in the 1940s and introduced the Cromarod range of stainless steel electrodes in the 1980s. Since 2000 the brand has been part of Illinois Tool Works (ITW), and it is made by ITW Welding AB in Partille, Sweden.
Elga product ranges
The Cromarod family covers covered electrodes for stainless, duplex and nickel-base work, with Cromamig and Cromatig solid wires and Cromacore flux-cored wires alongside it. For carbon and low-alloy steel, the P 48 series of basic electrodes is a long-standing line. Elga also offers seamless cored wires and moisture-protected Drypac packaging for its electrodes.
Ordering Elga consumables: what we need
State the exact product name, for example Cromarod Duplex, the classification your procedure specifies, the diameter and length of the electrode or the wire diameter and spool, and the quantity. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, checks the grade against the Elga product data sheet and can provide the data sheet and the certificates issued with the order on request.
