ABB ACS580-01-018A-4 AC Drive 7.5 kW 17 A
Description
What the ACS580-01-018A-4 is built for
Typical motor power of 7.5 kW, 17 A nominal current and a 125 x 229 mm frame R2 base describe the ACS580-01-018A-4, one rating in ABB’s ACS580-01 line for 380 to 480 V networks. Moving to frame R2 gives 7.5 kW in a housing that is still only 125 mm wide, a practical size for booster pumps, cooling-tower fans and extruder feeds.
All ACS580-01 drives share a control platform with scalar and vector control and support for induction, permanent magnet and synchronous reluctance motors. The package includes a built-in choke, EMC filter and STO. Related products are in AC drives and on the ABB ACS580 drive page.

Choosing and installing the ACS580-01-018A-4
Start from the motor nameplate. If it shows up to 16.2 A and the load is a pump or fan, light duty applies; for crushers, mixers or conveyors that see peaks, use the 12.6 A heavy-duty figure, good for about 18.9 A during a one-minute overload. At 480 V the same drive gives 14 A light duty and 11 A heavy duty.
Cabinet designers should allow 237 W and 101 m3/h of air flow. Maximum recommended motor cable is 200 m, and the catalogue fuse is 25 A gG (30 A UL Class T). If the load turns out to be 5.5 kW or less, ACS580-01-12A7-4 may fit (12.6 A); above 11 kW the next type is ACS580-01-026A-4 at 25 A.
Option codes for the ACS580-01-018A-4
Reading ACS580-01-018A-4: ACS580 names the series; 01 means wall-mounted; 018A is the rating field taken from the ratings table; the final 4 selects 380 to 480 V. Optional features are appended, for example +B056 for an IP55 / UL Type 12 unit, +B063 for IP66 / UL Type 4X, +F278 for an integrated main switch, +E223 for an integrated C1 filter, +C135 for flange mounting or +P944 to remove the conduit box on frames R5 to R9.
Enclosure choices for frame R2: IP21 as standard, and IP55 at 503 x 128 x 239 mm. IP66 / UL Type 4X (+B063) measures 606 x 208 x 260 mm, 14.5 kg. Plug-in fieldbus adapters listed by ABB are FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP (+K454), FSCA-01 for Modbus RTU (+K458), FEIP-21 for EtherNet/IP (+K490) and FMBT-21 for Modbus/TCP (+K491).
Key features of the ACS580-01 platform
- Built-in harmonic choke: the integrated choke reduces line current harmonics, which helps keep the supply cleaner without an external reactor in many installations.
- Integrated EMC filter: supplied as standard for use in second environment networks, with an optional C1 filter (+E223) where stricter emission limits apply.
- Safe torque off (STO): a hardwired safety function that removes torque from the motor, used as part of a machine or process safety concept.
- Motor control flexibility: scalar and vector control, with support for induction, permanent magnet and synchronous reluctance motors.
- Assistant control panel: the standard panel provides primary settings menus and plain-language messages, which shortens commissioning for common pump and fan duties.
- Plug-in fieldbus: communication is added with an adapter module rather than a different drive type, so one spare drive can serve several systems.
Light duty versus heavy duty in practice
The duty rating chosen for the drive must match the load profile, not only the motor power. Centrifugal pumps and fans have a torque demand that rises with speed and rarely need more than a short overload at start, so the 16.2 A light-duty figure is normally appropriate. Positive displacement pumps, conveyors, mixers and compressors may need high torque from standstill or during process upsets, and here the 12.6 A heavy-duty rating with 150 percent overload is the correct basis. If the motor nameplate current falls between the two figures and the load is demanding, selecting the next larger drive rating is the safer option.
Derating considerations
The catalogue ratings apply up to 40 °C ambient and 1000 m altitude. Above these limits the output current must be derated according to the hardware manual, and the derating also depends on the enclosure class and switching frequency. Increasing the switching frequency to lower motor noise also reduces available current, so check the curve before changing this parameter on a fully loaded drive.
Installation and commissioning notes
- Mount the drive vertically with the free space above and below that the hardware manual specifies, so the cooling air can pass through the heat sink.
- Use symmetrical shielded motor cable and terminate the shield 360 degrees at the cable gland to keep EMC performance.
- Check motor insulation before connecting the drive, and never perform insulation tests with the drive connected.
- Enter motor nameplate data and run the identification routine before putting the drive into service.
- Keep heat sinks and fans clean; on dusty sites, schedule regular inspection and cleaning of the cooling path.
Operating in Oman and GCC conditions
Summer temperatures in many Omani plant rooms and outdoor kiosks exceed the 40 °C reference, so the derating table and the cabinet cooling design are critical. An IP21 drive in an air-conditioned MCC room is the common arrangement; where the drive must sit near the motor in dusty or wash-down areas, the IP55 or IP66 variants protect against dust and water ingress, but direct sun loading and the higher internal temperatures still need attention. Typical local applications include water transfer and booster pumps, cooling tower and ventilation fans, and conveyor drives in mining and building materials plants.

About brand
ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.
ABB product families on this page
Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.
Where ABB instruments and drives are used
Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.
Ordering ABB parts: what we need
