Invertek Drives Optidrive E3 IP66 Washdown VFD

Description

Washdown-ready drive in a sealed IP66 enclosure

The Invertek Drives Optidrive E3 IP66 is the enclosed version of the Optidrive E3 family. It carries the electronics in a sealed polycarbonate and ABS enclosure rated IP66 and NEMA 4X, so it can be mounted on the machine or on a wall, close to the motor, without a cabinet. Ratings go up to 22 kW. The switched version adds a lockable mains isolator, a Run Reverse, Off and Run Forward selector, and a speed potentiometer on the front, which makes simple local control possible without wiring external pushbuttons.

The data below is taken from the Invertek Drives Optidrive E3 IP66 (indoor) user guide, which also covers the IP20 versions.

Typical applications

Because there is no cabinet to buy, build or ventilate, the enclosed drive is attractive for distributed machinery such as conveyors, mixers, pumps and fans in food, beverage, water treatment and packaging plants. The IP66 rating covers dust and strong water jets, and the coated heatsink is intended for harsher surroundings. The user guide still limits the ambient temperature, so direct sun and hot rooms should be checked against the figures above.

Wiring and control

The guide describes the power and control terminals and the installation requirements for each frame size. Control inputs can be configured for local or remote operation, so the same drive can be run from the on-board selector in service mode and from a PLC or a field signal in production. The application macros preload typical settings and shorten commissioning time. As with all drives, motor cable length and screening affect EMC performance and should follow the guide.

In hot climates the ambient temperature around an enclosed drive matters as much as the rating on the nameplate. An enclosed drive left in direct sunshine can exceed its permitted ambient temperature even when the room is cool, so a shaded mounting position or a sun shield is sensible. The motor, the cable and the supply protection should be selected to suit the full-load current of the drive that is ordered.

About brand

Invertek Drives designs and manufactures variable frequency drives at its global headquarters in Welshpool, Wales, in the United Kingdom. The company is part of Sumitomo Heavy Industries and holds ISO 9001 certification. Seven Star LLC lists selected Optidrive models with links to the official Invertek user guides.

Optidrive families

The Optidrive E3 is a compact general-purpose drive in IP20 and IP66 versions, with a variant for single-phase output motors. The Optidrive P2 is an industrial vector drive up to 250 kW, and the Optidrive Eco range is aimed at HVAC and pumping applications with built-in building and pump control functions.

Features such as sensorless vector control, Safe Torque Off, built-in fieldbus communication and low-harmonic design vary by family, so each product page lists the points that apply to that model and the limits of its environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does IP66 and NEMA 4X mean for this drive?
The enclosure is sealed against dust and strong water jets, so the drive can be installed on the machine without a separate cabinet.
What is the difference between switched and non-switched?
The switched version adds a mains isolator, a Run Reverse, Off and Run Forward selector and a potentiometer on the front panel.
What is the maximum power?
The IP66 range goes up to 22 kW.
Which communication ports are provided?
Two RJ45 ports, as listed in the Invertek Drives product information.
Is there an IP20 version?
Yes. The Optidrive E3 IP20 is the open version for cabinet mounting, and the user guide attached here covers both.
