Gastec

Gastec Corporation is a Japanese manufacturer specializing in direct-reading gas detector tubes and the sampling pumps used with them. Established on 1 September 1970, the company designs and produces its tubes at its head office and production site in Ayase, Kanagawa, and offers one of the widest ranges of detector tubes for toxic gases, vapours and oxygen, alongside electronic gas detectors and alarm meters for oxygen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide. Gastec tubes are used for spot checks in oil and gas facilities, refineries, confined space entry, industrial hygiene surveys and tank gas-freeing, where a fast reading is needed without electronic calibration. Seven Star LLC supplies Gastec detector tubes and accessories to plants across Oman and the GCC, helping safety teams keep verified, in-date tubes on hand for routine and emergency gas testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do Gastec detector tubes measure gas concentration?
A fixed volume of sample air is drawn through the glass tube with a sampling pump. The target gas reacts with the reagent inside and produces a coloured stain, and the length of the stain is read directly against the concentration scale printed on the tube.
How is the measuring range of a Gastec tube changed?
Each tube lists its range for a stated number of pump strokes. Drawing fewer or more strokes changes the sample volume and therefore the range; for example the No.4HH hydrogen sulphide tube reads 0.1 to 2.0% with one 100 mL stroke and 2.0 to 4.0% with a half stroke.
Can Gastec tubes be used with sampling pumps from other manufacturers?
Gastec tubes are calibrated with Gastec sampling pumps, whose stroke volume and flow characteristics match the tube scales. Using a different pump can change the sample volume or flow rate and give inaccurate readings, so the matching Gastec pump should be used.
How should Gastec detector tubes be stored?
Tubes carry an expiry date on the box and should be kept sealed, away from direct sunlight and heat. Some tube types require refrigerated storage, which is stated in their instructions, and expired tubes should not be used for safety decisions.
Where are Gastec detector tubes typically used?
They are used for spot measurements of hydrogen sulphide, carbon monoxide, oxygen and many other gases and vapours in oil and gas production, refineries, chemical plants, confined space entry checks, tank cleaning and industrial hygiene surveys.
